I’ve been wrestling with something lately...
It seems like a universal rule that most people end up falling hard for the ones who treat them the absolute worst.
Maybe I’m just reading the room wrong, but in my experience, whenever I’m being nothing but kind and supportive, the person I’m with couldn't care less about me. But then, the moment I stop playing nice and start acting a bit difficult? Suddenly, they’re obsessed, valuing me more than ever, and all this other stuff starts happening.

I’m really curious about the psychology behind this kind of behavior.
What’s the deal with how people act? Because honestly, the most frustrating part is realizing I’m doing the exact same thing. I find myself gravitating toward those "bad" guys—the ones who treat me poorly—and for some reason, they’re the ones I want the most. It’s incredibly damaging.

WHAT THE FUCK??????????????😕

I think you have it completely backwards. Most people don't actually chase after toxic individuals. If this is a consistent pattern in your life, it suggests there might be an underlying issue on your end that needs addressing. You really ought to take a step back and reflect. Do you truly need that kind of chaos? What is the point of being wonderful to someone who treats you like garbage?
Does that even make sense?

Okay, I think I misspoke there... I didn't mean to say it’s bad, per se. It’s more that things just don't always go smoothly. When you're constantly clashing with someone or when sparks start flying, that's what really gets to me—even if it's just bickering or a negative vibe.
I mean, wouldn't everything be incredibly boring and monotonous if it wasn't like that? Life would be so dull.
And regarding your point about people not latching onto the wrong things—I actually disagree. People definitely get hung up on the wrong stuff. Hmmm.
JUST TAKE A LOOK AROUND!
I could honestly give you a thousand different examples from my own circle of friends and acquaintances who would back me up on this.

"Take a look around"? Well, everyone is different. In any relationship, it's perfectly normal for two people to be different because opposites attract, BUT that doesn't necessarily mean one person is "bad" and the other is "good." Everyone has their ups and downs, which is how most relationships work, whereas those extreme power-play dynamics you mentioned at the start are actually quite rare. You probably just phrased it poorly. Perhaps you were referring to the friction that naturally arises in a partnership. It is completely normal for problems to exist, and truly perfect relationships are few and far between. If every single relationship were flawless, I suppose everyone would be rushing to the altar immediately.
It’s all part of a process of trial and error, of building up life experience. How can you ever recognize when a connection is truly right if you've never navigated a difficult one? Bad relationships eventually fall apart, and then you simply move on.

I don't think this just happens once in a while; I suspect it’s actually a fundamental rule of human nature. It sounds incredible, but it seems to be the truth, and honestly, I find it somewhat exhausting.

You’re basically trying to validate your own self-worth by proving to someone who clearly isn't interested that you're actually worth wanting...

I suspect the exact opposite is true for you, too—like, when someone is genuinely into you, you don't give them the time of day. It’s not the guys who are being difficult; it sounds more like you’re just a bit shaken up by the whole dynamic.

Anyway, here is a slightly simpler breakdown of that previous post 😁

There we go... finally someone gets it. It feels like nobody else understood what I was actually trying to say except you!
And I am totally on the same page as you here!

It certainly could be... that’s just one of my personal theories on the matter. Honestly, it feels like the only logical way to explain it!

Personally, there’s nothing more nauseating than a stable, predictable relationship where some guy texts me every five minutes with those cringey, over-the-top declarations of love—you know, the whole "I’d pluck the stars from the sky for you" routine. It honestly makes me want to gag.
That’s why I tend to gravitate toward guys where I can't quite figure out where I stand; at least with them, life isn't a repetitive, boring slog like it is with all those "nice guys."

Right now, I can't get the guy who slapped me this past Saturday out of my head. 😢 (I’ve started writing about it—specifically regarding violence and how we react to it)

Yeah... but what if we flip the script?
That’s really what’s been weighing on my mind lately...
I mean, looking back at all my relationships, I’ve noticed a pattern: I always seem to attract guys who are okay with how I actually behave towards them...
The only real issue is that they get used to me being pretty arrogant or saying some pretty harsh things when certain situations pop up. That isn't who I want to be—I don't want to crush anyone's spirit—but honestly, my self-control just isn't quite strong enough to stop myself when I start reacting intensely!
Does that make more sense now? Because that is the core of the problem!
P.S. I was actually at work when I was typing this, so it’s no wonder I totally messed up the phrasing! (I work in customer service answering phones 🙂 )

Well, sure, but I guess you just have to find a guy who actually knows how to handle you. Personally, I think 🤣
Barren on a psychology forum is just... well, it's pretty terrifying, if you ask me. 😲

Guilty as charged. We’ve all got a little bit of a masochistic streak in us. Some of us just lean into it harder than others. 😍
Look, I’m not talking about being a masochist in the sense that I actually enjoy someone treating me like garbage—I don't. I have zero tolerance for toxic behavior; if someone tries to play me, I'll shut them down immediately. What I mean is that I get a massive rush from someone who is a challenge to win over. I love that element of "uncertainty," where we both act like formidable opponents. And yeah, maybe "opponents" is a strong word, but you get what I mean. If someone is just constantly chasing me or has no backbone in the relationship, there’s absolutely no spark there. Don't get it twisted—I don't want bad people, and I certainly won't tolerate anyone acting out of line... they'll regret it. But I am incredibly drawn to strong-willed personalities.
