The Lionel Messi Phenomenon

My apologies in advance if this topic doesn't quite fit the vibe here; please feel free to move it or just scrap it entirely if it's out of place.
I can't help but wonder, where on earth does all this massive hype surrounding Lionel Messi come from? Right now, Fox's front page is practically plastered with at least four different articles featuring him in the headline, and honestly, it feels like that’s been the case for most of the year. Even during the World Cup, it seemed like nearly every single story would kick off with something like "Messi and the rest of the national team stars..."
Now, I'm certainly no tactical genius when it comes to soccer, and I'll admit, my loyalties lie nominally with Real Madrid. I don't follow the MLS very closely—aside from glancing at the headlines—so perhaps the media is giving this player's technical skills more credit than they actually deserve. What I did witness during the World Cup, however, wasn't exactly something that warranted such universal awe. Sure, he scored against Canada and provided an assist against Morocco... but was that really it? Beyond those moments, it felt as though his stamina completely deserted him after the 60th minute. He certainly didn't strike me as the undisputed superstar of the national squad, and I find it incredibly difficult to understand why he's being treated with almost messianic devotion over at Index.
I'm not saying this to imply that some other player is being unfairly sidelined because of him, but I have to ask: is Messi truly such a massive icon?

Besides, Lionel Messi is nothing more than a local legend in Miami and the surrounding areas. Seriously, if you walk past Saint Roch, 90% of people will just look at you and ask, "Who even is that guy?"

Washington, D.C. doesn't play favorites when it comes to the national team; it’s always been that way. I highly doubt Miami would show the same courtesy to Real Madrid players. You could see clearly yesterday that the Hajduk fans were bracing for the worst, and honestly, at that point, nobody gives a damn which club a player belongs to.
