To be honest, death is what actually scares me. Pain is tough, sure, but eventually, it breaks or fades away. I’d much rather deal with being in pain and still be here than just... not exist at all.

But then again, it's easy to say stuff like that when you're just looking at the big picture from thirty thousand feet up...

Honestly, my first instinct was to pick something, but upon further reflection, I’d rather choose nothing at all. It feels like an incredibly surreal question—purely hypothetical, really—as if anyone would ever actually face such a choice, let alone be forced into one by some dire threat like a gun to the head 🙂

That said, I can offer a general perspective. I certainly wouldn't opt for death; after all, who can truly predict that their life will be nothing but suffering, regardless of the circumstances? Being in a wheelchair, lacking limbs, having facial disfigurements—none of those things guarantee a miserable existence. In fact, I don't think the probability of a bad life is necessarily higher just because of physical limitations. Life, in its essence, involves some degree of struggle
So, I think it would be foolish to choose death—not that I fear death itself, per se—I’m more concerned about the manner of passing, largely because of my belief in reincarnation

As for choosing to live with a disability? Well, I suppose I might consider that if I were facing a terminal illness—certainly over death, anyway. Or at least, I think I would have the strength to do so, though I can't say for sure. My philosophy has always been that every single life is worth living, including this one

Speaking of impossible situations, I remember being absolutely fascinated by a news story about a guy pinned by a rock in the mountains—it must have been two or three years ago. This hiker found himself trapped in a deep crevice where he was practically invisible, with his arm crushed and no way to free himself. And what did he do? He used a pocketknife to amputate his own arm just to reach help. There was even a photo in the paper of him smiling
What can you even say about that?

My thoughts on this first part (ignoring the wheelchair bit for a second): I actually live with a chronic condition myself, and let me tell you, the pain can be pretty brutal and happens every single day. But... honestly? As long as I can still take care of myself (I’m still looking after my family, too), and as long as I can walk, talk, think, work, and just feel like a functioning person... I don't wish for death. I really don't want to be dependent on anyone else. The idea of spending the rest of my life unable to move, or having to endure those kinds of horrific, unbearable pains that people in the final stages of terminal illness go through... well, if things ever got to that point, I think I'd see death as a welcome escape.

wheel said:Which would you prefer: intense pain and suffering—say, being permanently confined to a wheelchair—or death?

I’ve mentally prepared myself for the end on more than one occasion, so death itself doesn't intimidate me...

but if it means dying in total agony, I’d certainly prefer to expedite the process... as quickly as possible...

As for disability, I suppose I could endure it, provided my vital organs were still functioning properly; otherwise, I'd choose death, assuming I had no lingering obligations to anyone else...

Pain is one of those things we would all, if given the choice, opt to simply never experience... yet, I don't think chronic illness or physical disability really fit into that specific desire; those are two entirely separate matters altogether. Honestly, I wouldn't mind living with an illness—after all, life is life, isn't it? My grandfather actually took his own life because he couldn't bear the psychological agony of feeling utterly insignificant, even though he was perfectly healthy in a physical sense.
On the other hand, death doesn't frighten me in the slightest. Death is merely a transition into eternal life, a reality that awaits every single one of us, whether certain misguided souls choose to believe it or not. That eternal existence could manifest as endless suffering or as infinite happiness, and personally, I’m choosing happiness. I try to live my life in a way that makes me worthy of that outcome. I truly do my best.

Everyone seems to be obsessing over these other people, holding them up as the ultimate cautionary tales to prove why death is somehow preferable to enduring pain
Don't you think those same individuals probably felt exactly the same way right before life decided to throw everything it had at them?

I’m not really a religious person, but I guess Jesus might have gone through something similar... you know, that whole fear of suffering and death thing. To me, it feels like the suffering is way worse if it happens right before death, like when there’s just no way out of it. Any other kind of pain, I don't know, maybe you can just push it down somehow.

People should take a long look in the mirror; some might actually realize how hypocritical they’ve become.
How does anyone even attempt to weigh the value of life against death? There are medicines meant to combat pain...
But living with a disability is an entirely different matter altogether.

unbearable physical and mental agony.
Death itself isn't what haunts me, per se. Rather, I find myself trembling at my own uncertainty regarding whatever lies beyond—I am terrified of the void. I realize how irrational it sounds, but there is this deep-seated fear of the total extinction of consciousness. Wouldn't it be simpler if I could just "let go" and simply drift away into somewhere else? I have no desire for nothingness, yet I frequently find myself unable to endure either the physical or the psychological torment. When the pain becomes truly unbearable, you simply want to surrender. And yet, something always holds you back... that nagging dread that perhaps everything might truly be over, forever. If I were certain that it wasn't the end, would I just let myself go? I don't know...

Pain is just an unavoidable, absolute mess (please excuse my language 🤣) that comes along with any breakdown in this imperfect physics of ours. Before I go, I really just hope I won't have to suffer through intense agony 🙄... As for death? I see death as nothing more than a transition from one dimension to another—just a different kind of beginning. I truly believe that people, or rather whatever remains once this heavy biological weight we call a body finally shuts down, that those souls—or whatever they may be—are in a state of complete peace and well-being 😍. They find happiness. I like to think that in that moment, we are reborn, returned to our original state, and "eyes wide open," ready to embark on a whole new expedition on some other Earth, in some other dimension 🙂.....
Pain is total garbage 👎. Honestly, I’d choose death over it any day 👍

I truly hope you're right, Jeffrey Bennett66, I really do. There are moments when I feel quite certain about these things, yet, unfortunately, I find myself lacking that unwavering conviction more often than I would like. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could simply exist in a state of constant, absolute clarity?
But then again... I suppose I think I know, yet even then, I can't say for sure if I'm actually certain, if that makes any sense at all.
