Greetings,

I currently own this particular Samsung TV model (it isn't a Smart TV), and I'm wondering if there's any way to bridge the gap between it and my smartphone or laptop—for instance, to stream something from YouTube directly onto the screen.
Would it be feasible to simply plug a Wi-Fi USB adapter into the set to establish a connection? 🤷
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just grab a Chromecast or an Android TV box.

What exactly does it do, and what am I looking at price-wise?

I’ve already got my cable service set up for regular watching—this would just be a way to occasionally cast something from my phone or laptop over to the TV when the mood strikes.

What about Google?
A Chromecast is basically $117 Links, Pandora, and those similar digital storefronts. It does exactly what you’re looking for—connect your TV to the Wi-Fi so you can stream YouTube, Netflix, photos, music, movies... basically just mirroring your laptop or phone screen onto the big screen.

An Android box, on the other hand, turns a "dumb" TV into a smart TV. You get an interface that feels a lot like using a phone, essentially turning your TV into an Android device. Plus, you can connect your phone via Wi-Fi.
As for the cost, whether you go for the high-end stuff or the budget versions at stores like $67 Best Buy and the like, you can find something decent online starting around $20, though prices can certainly climb if you aren't careful.

Personally, I just watch movies on my Samsung TV by hooking up my laptop with a five-meter HDMI cable. Maybe that's an option for you?!

Yeah, an HDMI cable for the laptop is definitely the way to go, but you can't exactly screen-share from a phone like that. Honestly, I’ve just had my Chromecast HDMI sitting in a drawer gathering dust ever since.

Some smartphones actually support MHL or SlimPort, which means you can grab a cheap $5 adapter and run a video signal straight from your USB port to an HDMI port.

I’ve got an HDMI cable lying around, but that’s really only useful when I’m sitting down to watch a movie—this setup would let me stream directly from my phone and all sorts of other things.
The main thing for me is that it’s wireless.

The second I picked up this smart TV, I shut off the Google and plugged it straight into my Comcast router with an Ethernet cable. Now I can stream videos and cast photos from my PC, laptop, or phone to the screen without any lag.
The main thing is, you gotta go wired.
