Hey there,
I’ve run into a massive headache with Microsoft Word lately. For a few days now, I haven't been able to open my saved files, make any edits, and save them back to the original file like I used to; instead, the software insists on forcing me to "Save As" a completely new document every single time.

So, whenever I try to open one of my files, this pops up:

It doesn't matter if I select "Open Read-Only" or just hit "Open"—it forces everything into read-only mode regardless. Even though the editing options appear at the top of the window once the file is open, the real nightmare happens when I try to save my work; it refuses to overwrite the existing file and creates a duplicate instead. This is absolutely infuriating because I have hundreds of these documents, and my hard drive is turning into a cluttered mess of redundant copies.

I honestly have no clue why this started happening out of nowhere since I haven't touched a single setting or changed anything on my computer. I can only assume some automatic update kicked in or something just glitched out behind the scenes and broke the workflow.

Is there some straightforward fix to get all these documents back to "normal" so I can actually open an existing file, edit it, and save it directly without this ridiculous duplication process?

Does anyone have a solution? 🙂

Ever tried just giving the machine a hard reboot?

Of course I did, that was my very first move, but for God's sake, the exact same thing keeps happening... 🤷

Maybe try turning on the setting to show hidden files first? Then you can just go ahead and delete that .~lock file. I guess either your computer might have shut down unexpectedly while you were working, or perhaps there was some kind of glitch with your Windows updates that left that lock file sitting there.

Give it a shot when you intend to save it using the exact same "filename," but append a symbol at the end—something like a plus sign. It might just force a reset of that protocol Kenneth Cruz67 mentioned regarding the program hanging in mid-air and clinging to its current position. I’ve encountered similar glitches when working in Microsoft Word. Once you're done, you can either delete that "Read-Only" file or simply leave it there as a grim souvenir of the ordeal.

I’ve already got hidden files enabled, but I'm not seeing any extra files of that type—no lock files whatsoever—so there's nothing for me to actually delete. It’s possible this is something else entirely, maybe some glitch within Windows left a phantom lock file buried somewhere deep in the system. Is there an actual fix for this?

That actually works, yeah. If I rename the file—say, by adding a plus sign to the end—it lets me save, though the damn thing saves it straight to my desktop instead of keeping it in the original folder. That’s a bit of a headache because I have a massive web of folders and subfolders to navigate... but if there isn't any other way to fix this, I guess I'll just keep doing that. Thanks for the tip.🙂

Try moving a file over to a different drive, like an external USB hard drive, and just work from there instead.

Anyway, I think I dealt with a similar mess once a long time ago—I don't recall the exact details—but my C: drive got formatted and that was absolutely it. Game over. 🙂
