So they just gave it to you based on that? Now that you actually have it, do you have anything locked in or what...? And did they set your limit at that exact amount?
You can just shoot me a DM. 🙂

That was my first time using one, and I think my limit was stuck around $1,100. It wasn't really working for me because it was tied to my foreign currency account, so whenever I bought something locally, I was getting hit by the exchange rate. I eventually returned it, opened a standard checking account instead (even though that's not where my main paycheck goes), and then grabbed another card that’s actually linked to my checking. I'm not entirely sure what my total limit is now, but the daily cap is $2000. Honestly, I have much larger CDs set up now than I used to, though at this point, having easy access to my cash matters more to me than the actual amount I have locked away.

You might want to check with JPMorgan Chase; I think someone mentioned on the forum that they set a default of 🤷

Alright, thanks for the input. 🙂
I'm gonna shoot them an email and see what they have to say about it.

Just hopped off a chat with their support team. 😁
The rep told me they only issue cards if you have a CD account first. 👋 😁

JPMorgan Chase? How much do you have to lock up? Any limits?

Yeah, JPMorgan Chase. The lady mentioned their Visa and Mastercard options start with a limit of $1333 (maxing out at $16667), so I’ll probably need to put more into a CD than the actual amount I want to spend just to clear the hurdle.
She told me to fill out the application but leave the employment section blank, since I'm basically applying based on my savings account.
Since I've been using a Delphi card through them for over two years and I've got pretty decent monthly spending for a college student 😁, I'm hoping that helps get the credit approved.
I'm heading down to the branch tomorrow to double-check everything.

Got some more details—you can actually grab a Visa or Mastercard if you set up a CD. The minimum deposit required is $667, and they’ll give you a credit limit of up to 80% of that amount. 🙂

So, which one's the better move: Visa or Mastercard? I know they're pretty much interchangeable when it comes to where you can use them. But what I really care about is—do both work fine for online shopping? 😁

I’ve already mentioned this in another thread, but it’s all pretty subjective. Which card works better really depends on things like which bank issued it or even which state you're in. Honestly, just pick whichever one you prefer. 😉

I'll probably just go with Maui since the membership fee is $6.75 lower.😬

Have you actually looked into this or tried to get one yet? I ask because from what I've heard, the minimum for a Mastercard is $4,000, and I think the Visa requires $6,000... So, I'm just wondering if there's any way I could push for a $2,000 limit instead. That would be totally doable for me, but $4,000 is starting to feel a bit steep—kind of double what I was originally thinking 😁

Yeah, it showed up on Friday. I moved some cash over to $1667, and since my Visa limit is $1333, I'm good to go.

I'm wondering if there's any way to make it work with $2,000—the lady from customer service told me the minimum is actually $4,000...

I think I'll try negotiating with them directly and see what happens... 🙂

P.S. how long did you end up waiting after you submitted your request?

I put the application in at a JPMorgan Chase branch back on November 10th. My card showed up at my house this past Friday, even though they originally told me I'd have to pick it up in Prague. So, yeah, one month total.

Just to clear things up on whether it's doable... 🙂

So, I stopped by my local Chase branch today, and they told me $2,000 is fine—even though just a day earlier, someone over the phone insisted it had to be $4,000. 😁
I'm going to trust what I heard in person at the bank, but honestly, here’s the takeaway—don't take everything you hear at face value. It's always better to double-check things yourself; that seems to be the rule of thumb around here... 🙂

When I was looking into this, I just shot an email over to American Express. They’re the ones who should really have the inside scoop.

Which banks actually offer credit cards specifically for students?

Between JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America...

JPMorgan Chase offers a student Diners card, but you need a parent to sign off on it first.

Bank of America has a student American Express with a set limit$667.

My take-home pay is about $1333, and after I pay off my $333 loan, I’m left with $3,000. That’s obviously not enough to qualify for any decent card, and honestly, I’m just looking for a basic charge card.

I applied for an American Express and they straight up rejected me after waiting a whole month.
Then I tried Diners Club and got the exact same answer.

Is it even worth bothering with a Bank of America Visa or a Mastercard?
Does anyone actually know what their criteria are, like, which one is the easiest to snag?

I seriously don't get how they operate. I know my salary isn't massive, but it's not like I'm planning to blow huge amounts of cash or anything... just want to pick something up on installments here and there.
It feels like I'm asking for a $33 handout, but meanwhile, they blast commercials for these cards on TV every ten minutes, and then when you actually apply—boom, shut out.

You can't even use a Bank of America Visa or Mastercard anyway if you're looking to pay in installments.

Anyway, there's already a thread about credit cards. 🙂

Trust me, you’re better off without a credit card sitting next to those loans. Honestly, banks are doing you a favor here. It sounds weird, I know—but maybe they're just making sure you don't spiral into a massive credit card debt hole that you can't dig yourself out of.
They'd much rather hand a card to someone who doesn't have existing debt and pulls in at least $4,000 a month.☕
