Hey, does anyone know if there’s a credit card in the US where the bank doesn't just convert every single foreign transaction into dollars? Like, if I'm spending in USD, can it actually pull directly from my dollar account? Or is that only possible with a debit card, like a Visa from Chase? Thanks!

Credit card charges hit your account in dollars, but how much you actually end up paying depends entirely on the conversion math used by your specific card—some process through the Euro while others go straight through the USD.

Thanks!
My Mastercard from Chase converts all my international spending into dollars, which then pulls directly from my USD account. I was wondering if there’s a card out there where dollar expenses pull dollars, Swiss francs pull francs, and so on... instead of everything being forced into dollars first and losing money on those conversion fees.
Does anyone know which bank in the US handles transactions via dollars the way Chase does with euros?

I’ve got a Chase Card Club Visa credit card, and whenever I buy something in a foreign currency, the charges hit my account in USD right away, skipping any middle step involving Euros or anything else.
It's different with my Diners, though—they convert everything to USD first, and then finally settle the amount in dollars.

I just got off the phone with Diners customer service. While I was at it, I asked about the status of my Visa application because my first attempt was declined a year ago—turns out I finally figured out why. The bank teller filled out all the paperwork incorrectly when she interviewed me, though she promised everything would be sorted out. After that initial rejection, I resubmitted the application online nearly a month ago. I checked in via phone today, and the representative confirmed that my Visa charge card has been approved with a limit of $1500. Now, I'm just waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Just to confirm, this works like a Diners card, right? Whatever I spend this month, I pay off the following month?

Spot on, Matthew Jackson49. A charge card is basically just a delayed payment tool... Everything you rack up during one billing cycle hits your account all at once when it's due.

So, I’m looking to pick up a new PC on a payment plan... maybe like 12 to 24 months through Best Buy.
The thing is, I’ve never actually owned a credit card before.
Starting next year, I’ll be kicking off a job with a company on a one-year contract.
What I’m wondering is, once I start working there, can I actually ask them to set me up with a credit card through the company...
or is that something reserved strictly for people with permanent, full-time positions?
If I am eligible for a card, can I just grab it immediately, or do I have to wait until my first paycheck actually hits my bank account or whatever the deal is with that...?
And where do I even go within a company to request a card—like, which department or office handles that, and how long does the whole process usually take?
I’m expecting my pay to be around $1667... so I guess I’m curious about how they decide my credit limit and how much I'm actually allowed to spend.
Look, I’m a total newbie when it comes to this stuff, so please, don't tear me apart here on the forum...

Your employer doesn't actually issue the card. You just fill out an application at a bank (or online, depending on the card) and provide your pay stubs. But honestly, with those employment terms, it might be tough to get approved.

So, why would it be such a struggle to get her?
Is it because I'm just on some temporary contract or something?

Sure thing. But honestly, how can you be certain you'll actually make all 24 payments when your job contract is only for 12 months?

Alright, so this was more of a "what if" kind of question to begin with, but hey...
let's say we're talking about splitting something into 5 monthly payments

but what I'm actually curious about—purely hypothetically, obviously
is whether a bank would even look at me for a credit card if I'm just on a fixed-term contract,
and if they would, what kind of hoops would I have to jump through?

Can someone please give me an answer here?
It’s actually pretty important to me...

Just ask a bank after New Year's rolls around.

Does anyone know if a merchant is actually allowed to set a minimum purchase amount for credit cards? I ran into this issue a few days ago while traveling through Bulgaria—they refused to take my Mastercard for some tiny expenses (one was about a buck fifty, another was less than a dollar), claiming the transaction fees were just too high to justify it.

I don't think they're supposed to, but I've seen it happen over in Greece 🤷

They shouldn't be turning people away.
I used my Mastercard $0.42 (in Washington, D.C.)
the other day.

Just out of curiosity, what did you guys actually pick up for those amounts? 😁

Nothing special, really. First instance was at a pharmacy—dealing with bandages and gauze because I managed to wreck myself a week before my trip and had to dress my wounds every single day 🙂. The second time was even more entertaining: I was fueling up at a gas station, and after tapping my card, I realized I wanted to grab some water too. Turns out, the lady at the pump wasn't having any part of it 🙂. Usually, I just swipe everything and carry cash solely for food or drinks at those random spots that don't take cards
.
By the way, you see way more plastic being used in bars and restaurants over in Mexico than you do here or in Bulgaria
.

In France, you run into those kinds of restrictions in plenty of places.
In some of the bars, a pack of cigarettes can easily set you back nearly fifty bucks.

Nobody actually knows their criteria... they use some internal scoring system to decide who gets a card, but without a permanent full-time contract? It's going to be tough...
