Hertz said:Conscience? Sure. But convictions? Not necessarily.
Because convictions can be wrong quite easily.
We gain new experiences and insights every single day, so it’s perfectly normal to shift a belief now and then.

Convictions can be adjusted... since both the world and we ourselves are constantly changing...

But those core values deep INSIDE US never change!

They are two very different things...

I see conscience as this divine program installed by God—super subtle and absolutely perfect. It’s basically everything God is: goodness, love, wisdom, justice, beauty... You can't really cheat it, though you can definitely bury it under the surface (so we don't hear it all the time). That’s what happens when someone commits their first sin—it’s a mess. If they keep doing it, that feeling starts to fade, and they just drift further away from God and themselves—away from happiness and anything positive. Eventually, they don't even feel much pain (because they have no desire to turn back to God and answer for their sins), but they can't be happy either, since they're so disconnected from God. This internal mechanism of righteousness is baked right into us; it dictates whether life feels good or bad based on what we believe we deserve deep down. So, if someone keeps doing something they perceive as a sin—even if it isn't actually "bad"—it ends up backfiring on them.
Someone could do something terrible five times over, but if they truly, perfectly believe it's right, there might not be any perceived punishment. But then again, if you actually live by your conscience, you can't honestly look at something truly heinous—like racism, for instance—and convince yourself it's okay, because your spirit is guided by wisdom.
That's just how I see it.

"Conscience is basically just that little voice inside your head whispering that someone might be watching you."

Not everyone carries a conscience quite like the way we discuss it here.
Whether that’s a blessing or a curse is up for debate.

It is a General Electric kind of force. No matter how hard you try to suppress it, it just keeps bubbling back up through whatever layers of bullshit you've used to bury it.
And you can tell yourself it’s dead and gone.

But once it kicks in, I like to imagine the old man upstairs just sits there with a smirk, watching some tiny little human worm writhe and sweat in his dark, cramped little corner.

It’s like a junkie going through a brutal withdrawal.

They end up slamming against the walls of their own existence, desperately clawing for light, for forgiveness, for an exit strategy.

Conscience is easily the most General Electric thing among all the forces out there.
😉

I spent my life running from people, running from my own bad calls, and burying the messy mistakes born from pure impulse or curiosity. I ran to avoid being honest with anyone, to avoid being vulnerable, yet somehow I managed to stay one step ahead of every wolf that ever tried to hunt me down.

And trust me, they were definitely there. Oh, they were.

But there was one I couldn't outrun; it finally caught up.
When we were in the ring and I took that heavy right hook, I figured I’d just wobble a bit because I thought I was "tough."

Instead, it didn't just buckle my knees—it floored me face-first.

All I could do was lift my bruised head just enough to see who had knocked me down.

It was Conscience.

Huh.

Conscience.
It’s a tough one to pin down, honestly.
But if we assume it actually exists, we can start looking at how it kicks in—and the Intel level at which it hits us...
WHEN DOES IT KICK IN?
It starts when a kid begins to realize they’re an actual person in a world full of other things.
Probably around age three.
INTEL LEVEL
If we put conscience on a scale from 1 to 10, you have to wonder just how much it actually drives us. That Intel level is probably tied to our personality, our upbringing, genetics, karma, your star sign, or whatever else...
I'd bet childhood plays a huge part in that Intel level too—all those memories and the vibe of the society and people we grew up around.

I’ve always been quite fond of the phrase "aligning one's conscience."
I actually work with a guy who will go to extreme lengths to frame every single action he takes as being morally beyond reproach.
For instance:
He hires someone, but refuses to report their full salary to the IRS; because, in his mind, why should you hand a dime over to a government that’s just going to waste it? And at no point does his inner voice ever whisper, "Wait, what about the sick, the elderly, or the people relying on social safety nets? What about our infrastructure, our schools, or our hospitals?"
No, he stays perfectly convinced that his money would simply end up in the pockets of corrupt politicians. So, through this little bit of "conscience alignment," he sleeps like a baby.

To me, a conscience is really just a brake. It’s that thing that keeps me from grabbing everything everyone else has by using the same tactics they use. At the end of the day, they might end up with all the material wealth, but I get to keep my peace of mind.
