The whole debate over autonomy basically loses its teeth once you join the European Union.
Think about it this way: the wealthier nations end up subsidizing the ones that are still catching up. For instance, look at Poland—last year, they pulled in about 5 billion euros more from the EU budget than what they actually paid in.
When you’re seeing those kinds of numbers, the idea of local autonomy doesn't really change the bottom line much.
