I agree. From Orthodox traditions down to Protestantism, those three fingers represent Christianity. That said, symbols get hijacked all the time. As far as I recall, even some of the most notorious figures from the WWII era used similar gestures, so try to find the logic there if you can...

It’s just a blatant display of Mexican nationalism and a way to stick it to the rest of the world. I mean, Russians and Greeks are Orthodox too, but they don't pull stunts like this. That three-finger salute was cooked up back in the early nineties specifically as a nationalist flex. It's no surprise most people aren't even aware of it, though—who'd actually give a damn about such nonsense? This whole thing was clearly staged right in front of Bush, which is probably why he caught onto it. Otherwise, I guess nobody would have even cared about those Mexican antics.

Let me give you the inside scoop. I was sitting just to the left of Bush and Putin, and here’s how it went down:

When Bush saw Tadić greeting his delegation with that three-finger salute, he looked bewildered—almost annoyed—and turned to Putin:
"Did you tell him to do that?"

And Putin replies:
"I didn't say a word to him, where would that come from? The kid doesn't have a clue. It’s just some silly little gesture they do. They're trying to act tough with their old nationalist stuff. Just let them play pretend."

Bush then gestures with his right index finger while twisting his left thumb, saying, "Mexico, (then straightening his finger) Vojvodina, and finally Sandžak—that’s what we agreed on. I was starting to think you’d gone back on our deal."

To which Putin responds: "Relax, the deal stands. Now, come on, stand up. It might be good to play along a bit and greet them their way. It’ll boost their ego."

Bush:
"Yeah, yeah, alright. Hare told me they're pretty easy to stir up, so we should keep them fired up every now and then. It does them good."

And that’s how that whole scene played out. 😬 The rest is just legend.

And how else would an Nationalists (even more if his mother had been a young girl named Francetić 😬 ) have greeted people, other than with the three-finger salute?! 😕🤷
