I was watching some highlights from a major tournament last night and it got me thinking about the balance between seeing the absolute best players in the world and actually developing local talent.
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing world-class superstars step onto the pitch. It raises the level of play and makes the broadcast much more exciting for casual fans. But lately, I’ve been feeling like some of these franchised leagues are becoming more about "all-star" spectacles rather than building a lasting foundation for the sport in a specific region.
If every team just buys the biggest names from abroad, what happens to the kids growing up in the local academies? Are they even getting a shot at the big stage anymore? I worry we're trading long-term sustainability for short-term hype.
Do you guys think these "globalized" league rules help or hurt the local grassroots level?
