Always having issues with Microsoft Word :)

I am currently working in Microsoft Word 2003, and my objective is to implement page numbering, yet I am struggling with the logistics of how to ensure the numbering actually commences from, say, the fifth page. It is my intention to leave the initial few pages unnumbered, but despite my efforts, I simply cannot grasp the mechanism required to achieve this. I am well aware of the "don't show number on first page" setting, but that is entirely insufficient for my needs, as I require the exclusion to apply to several preceding pages.

Well, it seems we have achieved some measure of success, though I must admit, certain elements remain stubbornly unresolved.

I have managed to successfully create two distinct sections, yet I find myself facing a most frustrating technical impasse: whenever I attempt to Insert page number, the software insists on numbering both the first section and the second section, whereas my sole intention was to have the numbering applied exclusively to the second section.
I am encountering yet another grievance, one that defies all logical explanation: for some inexplicable reason, the software refuses to align my numbers to the right. It will happily settle for center alignment, and it will dutifully obey a command for left alignment, but when I specifically request a right alignment? Absolutely nothing. I select the right-align option, clicking through the menus with what I assumed was precision, yet the numbers stubbornly remain anchored to the left corner as if they simply refuse to acknowledge my existence. 🤔

I also find myself grappling with this particular nuisance regarding section breaks. In my initial four-page section, I am attempting to restrict the Header so that it only appears on the third and fourth pages—or perhaps, if it isn't too much trouble, simply omit it from that first section entirely. However, the software seems determined to force it onto the second page regardless of my intentions! Does anyone have any insight into how to resolve this? Help?

I simply cannot wrap my head around this—I go to delete the Header in my first section, only to find that the second section has been wiped clean as well! If the changes propagate like that, then what was even the point of creating two distinct sections in the first place? It feels entirely futile. I am sitting here staring at the screen, wondering exactly where I went wrong in this process. Where did I miss the mark?

I put together a quick video tutorial just for you on how to start page numbering from page 5, or whatever page you need. My version of Microsoft Word 2003 is set to German, but I guess the command layout stays the same regardless of the language, so you should be able to find what you need to click. 👍

To properly initiate this process, you really ought to navigate toward the Insert menu and select Insert page number, though I have found that many people simply stumble through the menus without a clear understanding of what they are actually accomplishing. It is a tedious necessity, certainly, but essential for anyone attempting to produce a coherent manuscript.

Look, try my step 4 first—go straight to Insert page number, and you'll see it puts a "4" on that fourth page (in my specific case, anyway). To force it to actually say "1" instead of "4," you have to go into the Format page number settings and check the box to start at 1. If you do that right, the first section stays blank, and the second section kicks off perfectly from 1 onwards.

By default, the second section has the "same as previous" option enabled. Unless you manually uncheck that, both headers are going to behave identically.

The workflow should be:

- Insert Section break
- Uncheck "same as previous" in the second section
- Set your headers for the first and second sections individually
