I'm having some trouble getting AutoCAD 2008 up and running—it keeps throwing error 1606 at me during the setup process. Does anyone have a fix to help me get this installed successfully?

I've got AutoCAD 2008 running on my machine, and honestly, it works without any issues whatsoever.

Are you trying to install this on a virtual machine? Because if you are, don't hold your breath—none of it actually works. Even if the documentation claims it's compatible with a VM, 😁 😁 😁

I’ve got AutoCAD 2008 installed on my laptop running Vista, as well as on my desktop running Windows XP.
Everything is up and running smoothly on both Vista and XP without any hiccups at all.

Just use Google, for heaven's sake.
Type in "error 1606" or whatever specific code is staring you in the face and just... Google it.
If you actually know English, you'll find an answer in seconds. If not, honestly, you might as well toss AutoCAD straight into the trash. It’s a bit of a tragedy, really—when you can't navigate the English-speaking web, you're basically left stranded without any decent resources to lean on.

I just finished setting up AutoCAD 2008 on my Windows XP machine [need it for a college project]
Everything went smooth enough, except I had to throw in a crack for Windows XP/Service Pack 2. It wouldn't even attempt the install without Service Pack 2 [my XP didn't have it because we've basically just used it for gaming until now].

Have you tried this:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet...linkID=9240617

It basically says that AutoCAD 2008 on Vista fails to find all the user profile components [the standard folders] because of some registry mess-up.
It tells you how to check which folder has the wrong address.
Maybe the easiest fix is just creating a new user account?

It’s entirely possible those CDs are just duds. To be honest, I didn't have much luck with the 2006 version either—it had its own set of glitches that drove me up the wall. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly was breaking, but all I know is that I ended up rolling back to 2005, then jumping to 2007, and eventually settling on 2008.

Try creating an exact disk image to your hard drive first, then run the installation from there. That worked for me.
