Basophils?

So, I just got my blood work back from the doctor, and apparently my basophils are running a little high. 😠
Does anyone here actually know what that’s supposed to mean?

That's actually a specific type of white blood cell. It could point toward some kind of inflammatory response going on in the body. Just a heads-up though—I'm definitely not a doctor!

Allergies.

So... am I actually allergic to something? I'm asking because my doctor basically just glossed right over that info on my blood work during the checkup, insisting everything was totally fine.

The target range is supposed to be between 0 and 1%, but my results came back at 1.24%.

Basophils can be an indicator of Type 1 hypersensitivity, commonly known as an allergy. You might want to run some additional tests if you're looking for a definitive answer. What are your eosinophil levels? Have you checked your IgE levels lately? Also, do you suffer from asthma, or perhaps dealt with an insect bite recently?

Extra tests because of 1.24 basophils? Give me a break...

My eosinophil count came back at 4.22, which is totally within the normal range (0-7), right? So, I don't have asthma, and honestly, I can't think of a single bug bite I've had lately. 😕
So... what kind of follow-up tests should I be looking into?

At this stage, your remaining options are likely an IgE panel or allergy testing. However, given how low your current levels are—which I know some people find surprising—you might just want to wait until spring to re-run a CBC. If those basophil counts come back slightly elevated again, just a bit higher than what you're seeing now, then it would be worth pursuing the tests mentioned above to pinpoint the cause...

It's the same old story... my blood work came back and the basophil count is double what it should be—specifically at 2. My doctor didn't even bother addressing it, just brushed it off saying everything looks fine. I'm heading back for a follow-up this Tuesday, and I'm going to insist on a real explanation for what those numbers actually mean...
