I took a hit to the eye, and now one of my scleras looks completely bloodshot, though my vision seems fine. Is this just something that'll clear up on its own, or am I looking at a mandatory trip to the doctor?

It'll fade. Give it two or three weeks.

Head down to the pharmacy and grab some Dexamethasone eye drops, then ask the pharmacist how many times a day you should be using them because I can't quite recall.
Those drops are specifically designed for injuries like yours since they contain a bit of antibiotic too. You should be back to normal in about a week.

I've already got some Sulfasol drops lying around at home. Are those actually any good?

Austin Phillips3, what even are you doing for work if you're getting hurt this bad?
I'm actually starting to get worried about you now.🙄

Go ahead and keep fighting... next time you'll be asking me how much a glass eye costs...

Seriously, let's stop giving advice on stuff we clearly don't know anything about!!!!!

I mean, you're telling this guy to just go out and grab steroid eye drops—out of nowhere, no doctor's visit or nothing—and you're acting like corticosteroids have some kind of mysterious antibiotic effect... 🙄

I’d rather not waste my energy on nothing. 🤣
If things don't settle down soon, I'm heading to the doctor.

Restless soul. Thanks for the concern. 😉

If this doesn't clear up soon, I'm heading to the clinic.

A bit of a restless guy. Thanks for looking out for me. 😉

I actually went to the doctor because my eye was bloodshot—like, almost entirely red. They told me the best move was to just leave it alone and let it heal naturally. Sure enough, three weeks later, it finally started fading.

Look, whatever an ophthalmologist tells you, they're saying it AFTER they've actually EXAMINED the eye! 😲

Don't mess around when it comes to serious stuff.
Get off your butt and head straight to the clinic.

Yeah, listen, Austin... if we're talking about a subconjunctival hemorrhage—and based on how you described the impact, that’s likely what it is—then honestly, there's nothing to do. It's just a bruise, plain and simple. It looks absolutely terrifying, like something out of a horror movie, but it's actually harmless. Trust me on this one.😉

The other thing is, if your eye was red because of actual inflammation or an infection, you'd be feeling a whole different set of symptoms. Plus, an ophthalmologist—someone who literally stares at eyeballs all day for a living—would spot that kind of trouble immediately.🙂

See? That's exactly it. 🙂 Everyone’s just looking for some magic pill or useless drops that don't actually do anything besides drain your wallet.

I mean, seriously? You're out here telling some guy to just go grab steroid eye drops for no reason at all—no doctor, no checkup, nothing. And you're acting like corticosteroids have some kind of magical antibiotic powers or something... 🙄

The real issue is that there's always some self-proclaimed "expert" popping up on this forum🙄 ready to dish out unsolicited medical advice. Honestly, you hit the nail on the head—it's about time someone called it like it is.👍

man, screw that, I'm not trying to be an expert or anything... I just run everything through Google 🙄 before I even think about dropping advice on this forum!

The amount of corticosteroid in those drops is just enough to bring down tissue swelling, while the antibiotic is there in a dose meant to prevent or wipe out inflammation. (That's what a doctor told me)
I wasn't trying to play doctor here; I'm just speaking from my own life and what my family has dealt with. Obviously, everyone is responsible for their own choices. If I were in his shoes, I'd head straight to a physician—I've injured my own eye a couple of times, and every single time, dexamethasone was prescribed and it did the trick. My grandmother actually had to use dexamethasone preventatively after undergoing laser treatment for glaucoma. It sounds ridiculous, but even my dog was prescribed the exact same drops for a tear duct infection. Besides, you can pick these up over the counter, so I highly doubt you could even overdose on them; the whole thing would fall apart before you hit that threshold.

They might do the trick, but here’s the thing with eye drops: expiration dates are everything. Since they have to stay completely sterile, you can't just wing it. If you haven't opened that bottle within the last 90 days, I wouldn't risk putting them in your eyes if I were you.

My doctor put me on Dexamethasone, which pretty much landed me in the ER because I spent a few days walking around with vision like I was wearing a pair of +16 glasses. Turns out it was an allergic reaction—my eye pressure just shot through the roof. Not exactly a fun time. So... yeah, I wouldn't say this is something you should just DIY. Corticosteroids don't really sit well with my system (I have to make sure to mention that to doctors every single time from now on), but since most people seem fine with them, I guess... I'd still recommend following a doctor's orders.

If you actually take a second to read through the side effects and contraindications for Dexamethasone, you’ll lose all interest in just eyeballing the dosage and dropping it into your eyes whenever you feel like it.

It’s not like I know anything, right? Just "refresh the contact lenses" and let's get to dripping, and we'll see how that works out for us.

Personally, my ophthalmologist gave me a completely different set of instructions for my specific issues than what was printed on the bottle, so I’m telling you—just listen to a doctor.
