Hey everyone.
I’m living and working in England, and a few days ago—last Thursday, actually—my left testicle started swelling up. I woke up with this sharp pain in my abdomen just above my left groin, and everything was swollen. I somehow managed to drag myself to work on Thursday, but man, it was a struggle to get through the shift. When I lie down, things feel a lot better; the swelling goes down, though it still hurts to touch, and the size gets back to almost normal. I spent basically all of Friday and most of Saturday just lying around. By Saturday night, I headed to the ER. I told the doctor that back in late 2005, I had surgery in Indianapolis for bilateral inguinal hernias, so I figured maybe the left side gave way and migrated into the scrotum. But she was convinced it was an infection. She asked all the usual questions—fever, blood in urine, blood in semen, burning when peeing, stuff like that—but everything came back negative. Still, she stuck to her guns about it being an infection and prescribed a 14-day course of antibiotics, telling me to follow up with my GP if it doesn't clear up. Today, I could barely last two hours at work. I had these brutal pains in my groin and testicle just from putting weight on my left leg, and now I'm even getting pain in my left side, right at the same level as the abdominal pain.
Has anyone here dealt with testicular hernias? What kind of symptoms should I be looking for?
When I touch the area, I can't really feel anything besides veins, which is the same as my right side. I read somewhere that when standing, a hernia might be cutting off blood flow to the testicle, causing the swelling.
Anyway, these antibiotics haven't done a damn thing. If anything, I feel worse. I’ll try seeing a doctor again tomorrow, though I'm pretty skeptical about the healthcare system here—it feels a lot more broken than back home—but I don't really have a choice.
If anyone has any experiences or advice, please let me know.

This might come off a little weird, but I gotta ask: are you actually wearing boxers? If you are, do yourself a favor and stick to 100% cotton. Seriously. If you don't, someone else—likely a doctor or some medical expert who actually knows what they're talking about—is going to have plenty to say about it later on.

So, I went to my GP today. He actually agreed that those antibiotics were a total misfire—I mean, if they were working, I should’ve been feeling better after five days, not worse. He wasn't really sure what's going on, so he ordered an abdominal ultrasound and a scrotal ultrasound. Now I’m just sitting around waiting for a letter in the mail to tell me when the appointment is. When I asked about the wait time, he said maybe 20 or 30 days. What am I supposed to do about work then? It hurts like hell if I stand up for too long. He just kind of tells me, "Oh, just go to work, take some Ibuprofen or Tylenol, you'll be fine..."
So much for "medical science." Just sit there and rot while you wait, I guess.
