Can this be saved?

Hey,

I probably have a pretty stupid question here because I’m a total newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff. So, basically, I had this old MP4 player, and it somehow slipped out of my pocket onto the floor and then... well, got run over by a car. It’s absolute carnage. The thing is, that player holds memories of someone dear who isn't with us anymore, so I’m wondering if there’s any way at all to salvage the data and move it over to a different device?

Well, I guess you’ll just have to drop it off at a mechanic to get a real look, since we can't really tell how much damage there actually is.

There’s probably a chance to save something here—but you won't find help at your local neighborhood repair shop. You’d need to go through specialized data recovery firms. Just keep one thing in mind: even if they actually manage to pull your files back from the dead, they are going to charge you an absolute fortune for it. It’s going to be pricey, like, seriously expensive.

....that pretty much means everything is totally trashed... screen and battery are absolutely pulverized.... the only thing that looks remotely okay is the motherboard.... is there anything actually worth salvaging from it? I'm a total amateur here, so I don't want to waste my time dragging this to a repair shop just for them to charge me a ridiculous amount for 🙂

If it really means that much to you, then just go for it—you don't exactly have anything to lose, do you?

Just go for it. If the motherboard isn't fried, there's probably a chance it can be saved, I guess.
