Hey everyone,

Does anyone happen to know the specific causes behind this kind of infection? Also, if things unfortunately take a turn for the worst and result in a pregnancy loss, would there definitely be some physical evidence of the infection left behind during an autopsy or medical exam?

If an infection is actually present, how long does the evidence linger in the system—basically, how much time passes before it can no longer be detected?

Thanks!

Chorioamnionitis—basically an infection of the fetal membranes and the sac itself—can kick in through a few different routes:
1. An infection moving up from the vagina or the cervix via ascending bacteria.
2. Traveling through the bloodstream—essentially the mother’s blood carrying the pathogen.
3. Direct spread from an infection site straight into the endometrium.
4. Moving through the fallopian tubes.
5. During medical procedures—where bacteria get introduced into the amniotic cavity during a diagnostic or therapeutic intervention.
6. If the egg is fertilized by sperm that's already carrying the infection.

When it comes to the usual suspects, we're looking at bacteria like E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, along with things like Cytomegalovirus, Toxoplasma gondii, and Pseudomonas.

The infection leaves its mark on the fetal membranes, which can be confirmed through histological testing. You can usually detect the infection about 1 to 1.5 months after it starts.
