mellowraven22, regarding the twenty-sixth day of Silaj's topic

First off—my ban—let's just call it trivial. Just as I told you all that I won't tolerate people going behind my back, you've made it clear you won't tolerate me doing the same to you. In mainstream psychology, I believe they call that the no asshole rule.

My topics actually matter—and unlike having or lacking some sort of "justifiable" reason to post under a pseudonym, these have substance. Someone else could have written them, or I could have posted them under a different handle—it wouldn't change much, unless your argument is that the issue doesn't exist outside of my specific framing. If there is a possibility that you feel that way, it’s been pretty easy to conclude that over these last twenty days, primarily based on how ZgSash reacted in that long-running case thread, and even in some of the satellite threads.

So, I am asking for a closer explanation regarding why my two threads were removed (whether by deletion or locking):

The issue of "fair" generalization via EL: regarding the level of discussion on Politics
The non-functioning subforum PŽK, or lost in translation

I’ve gone through the code of conduct on PŽK as written by Bellwether, and—well, it isn't entirely clear where I went wrong. I wonder if anyone else would have run into the same trouble if they had opened identical threads. Saying this doesn't apply to me wouldn't hold water, because it was evident from both threads exactly how the moderator actions or the identified issues directly impact me. It is even clearer how both situations are significant in the long run, and how they strike at the very essence of our purpose here (as part of other media outlets).

In the middle of the confusion, all my posts and threads from some time ago were deleted first, only for most of those posts and one thread to be restored later. However, those two specific threads above were not. Regarding the one about PŽK, I don't mind if it's simply noted, but for the one concerning the situation on Politics, I am requesting an explanation as to why it wasn't taken into consideration.

mellowraven22, honestly, people can be such jerks sometimes! It feels like they just don't want to engage with us in any meaningful way, and then you start questioning why we’re just spinning our wheels in circles.
That thread you shut down yesterday? You could call it whatever you want, but let's be real—it lasted a full month, spanned ten whole pages, and if you actually counted, you could barely find a single post that was even slightly out of line. And again, just people being difficult.
We really do go out of our way to stay polite and keep things focused on actual arguments, even when nobody is responding to us, and even though this silence—this constant stalling of everything—is making us feel a little more arrogant than we’d like to be.
With so many topics and posts flying around, I really wish it would occur to anyone that there’s genuine effort being put in here, because we truly believe it’s worth the trouble.

The issue here is that mellowraven22's conclusion doesn't actually follow from the topic at all. Even if I take the part where they address the cliques into account, I think the discussion points were clear from the get-go. It seemed obvious to me from the start that this thread wasn't being allowed to grow because there's some constructive goal in mind—it's more like it’s being held back until the timing feels right to finally shut it down. Still, I don't think that should be how we approach these conversations.

It might be useful to look closely at the actual content being debated, and perhaps see whether "cliques" are forming before or after certain questions are raised. If it happens afterward, maybe we aren't dealing with cliques at all, but rather just a large enough group of us who recognize the core issue? It isn't necessarily true that this was a forced topic (I would have been strongly against that, and I've voiced my opposition to similar examples—even within the moderator circle—that I felt fell into that category), but it's possible that something which initially slipped under the radar—maybe due to routine or just general chaos?—only gained significance through a later, more articulated complaint. I wonder, would things have played out differently if someone else, say someone from within the inner circle, had been the one to spot the problem instead of me?

So? Nothing new here, they've always been complaining. They threw fits over jokes when a thread got shut down, they bitched about RiD once moderation actually started working properly, they complained about politics for a million different reasons, they even acted out over religion when they couldn't get a private subforum just for Catholics... See my point. This whining isn't anything new or special, and I'm definitely not wasting my precious time on it. It's just more of the same daily nonsense we've seen a ton of before, and we'll see plenty more of it. I've already made my stance clear and I don't have the energy to write a hundred-page manifesto just to justify myself again. If they don't like it, there's plenty of other stuff on the internet.

You can call that thread you closed yesterday whatever you want, but it only lasted a month, it was ten pages long, and you could count on one hand the posts that were even slightly rude.

Polite <> useful.

Just give me one sentence—why are you guys even complaining?

mellowraven22, if you're finding it difficult to keep up with everything, maybe just take a look at the last sentence of my opening post.

I didn't start this thread just to give Matthew Grant9 some general answer about that situation. It isn't about being petty—honestly—it's more about the actual substance of what was said.

Honestly, this is brilliant. If you look at my deleted threads—and even the posts from Silaj's threads—there’s actually more substance and actual utility there than in those "summaries" of yours.

I just want one sentence—why are you all even complaining?

It seems almost impossible that you haven't managed to figure out the main points of the debate by now, right?

One more thing—I’m the one who actually started this thread, not Matthew Grant9. You’re responding to me first, so if you happen to address someone else along the way, that doesn't really apply to my concerns. You can't exactly answer me by just chatting with another forum member within the same thread.

Honestly, this topic would have been opened much sooner if it weren't for Silaj's thread—which I supported, by the way, and I even adjusted to the format used there. Now, you're finally addressing a topic that should have been handled over twenty days ago. Just look at the opening post—specifically that last sentence.

Nah. I’ll answer whoever I feel like answering, and however I feel like answering them. You don't get to demand that everyone directs their replies solely to you.

So, I guess you decided this was the point worth addressing, but skipped my opening post entirely? Especially since that first post covers a topic that falls under your duties as an admin and moderator—not just some random comment by Nine Williams, or this specific post you're replying to now.

Regarding this idea about cloning abuse? First off, what would even be the motive or the end goal behind such an abuse? And are you certain that my thread regarding the case over at politics (the Aunt Elsa situation) doesn't exist independently of whoever started it? You keep saying that useful content is what matters to you—well, isn't that topic useful to you too? If it isn't, then why not? That was really the question I posed in my initial post.

Which you didn't answer.

As for whatever motivation or goal they have... honestly, I don't care. I really don't have the bandwidth to sit here and psychoanalyze why someone would even want to make clones. But look, you just don't write about clones on Amtrak, period. If you do, you're basically inviting people to start purging them without anyone asking questions first.

Regarding that whole topic, the link in the original post is broken, so I can't even check it out.

I suppose I finally see why everyone considers you such a gifted diplomat.

Take a look at how things used to be back in the day—when meaning was essentially baked right into someone’s identity and their technical approach.

A clone is really just a shorter way of handing out a permanent ban, I guess.
Since it seems like you aren't exactly satisfied with anything on this forum—honestly, it feels like nothing quite hits the mark for you—it probably doesn't make much sense for us to keep you around just to endlessly respond to your constant complaints and "surprises."
Zack Snyder

Yes.
Well, like I mentioned before—and I don't mean to sound blunt here—we aren't exactly planning on keeping you around any longer than necessary.
Lisa Hernandez3, please feel free to keep posting if you'd like—but I would ask that you try to stick to the general spirit of the forum rather than getting too bogged down in the technicalities.
Zack Snyder

We don't necessarily need a set of rigid rules that cover absolutely every single scenario—that just isn't practical, I guess. However, if it's determined that someone is actually abusing the clones, then we should probably maintain the right to step in and resolve the situation. Tyndall

It sounded a bit different back then, didn't it? I suppose we all know exactly what we mean—though things have certainly shifted since then. Misuse—it’s a tricky thing, isn't it? I suppose there are times when things just get taken too far, though I guess it really depends on how you look at it. Maybe it's more about intention than anything else, but still... it's a bit unsettling. It's implied—and I think you both were actually hinting at the fact that I’m basically just a clone of the former moderator—given our previous discussions. Just wanted to reach out and introduce myself to everyone here. I suppose it feels a bit formal to start things off this way—though I guess that’s just how I tend to approach new situations—but I thought it might be nice to say hello. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all and joining the conversation. The breakdown in communication was also a pretty significant factor in all of this—I guess you could say it played a massive role. It seems like there might be an issue here—I'm not quite sure what we're looking at yet. If you could provide some more context or details about the situation, I’d be happy to take a look and see if I can help figure things out. Maybe we just need a bit more information to get to the bottom of it.).

Since I’ve noticed quite a few users posting under clone accounts on the forums lately—which can get a bit messy—I was thinking it might actually be pretty helpful if you took what you wrote today and officially added it to the rules.

Give this link a shot—it covers the topic: I’ve been thinking quite a bit about how much things have changed since we first started discussing this topic—it feels like ages ago, doesn't it? I suppose it’s just one of those things where you don't realize how much ground you've covered until you look back at the old threads. Regarding the recent updates to the regulations—well, I guess there isn't much room for debate if the new laws are already being implemented by the federal government. It seems inevitable, really. I was reading some commentary earlier that suggested we might see more shifts in how these policies affect local businesses here in the States, though I suspect that's mostly speculation for now. Lisa Hernandez3 mentioned something similar a while back—if I recall correctly—about how these systemic changes tend to ripple through the economy in ways we can't always predict immediately. It’s a bit of a complex situation, I suppose. Maybe we should wait for the next quarterly report from a major firm like JPMorgan Chase before jumping to any final conclusions. Anyway, I'm curious to hear what everyone else thinks. Does anyone feel like the current direction is actually heading toward something productive, or are we just spinning our wheels? I'd love to get a sense of the general consensus—if there even is one.
Well, we all know the topic is buried in those deleted threads—it's pretty obvious, I guess.

And since you're asking me for the link now—which, I guess, doesn't necessarily mean you haven't been ignoring the whole thing for the last twenty-odd days? Especially considering you actually commented earlier that it was about... I suppose there’s a certain level of misuse happening—though I can't quite put my finger on the extent of it all. It seems like things aren't always being handled the way they ought to be, if you know what I mean. Maybe it's just a matter of oversight, or perhaps something more intentional—it's hard to say for sure without more context, I guess. Clone. Or maybe you only read that other thread?

It would honestly be such a huge help if we could take a closer look at the specific topics everyone is actually debating, just to see if any real patterns or trends are starting to emerge! I just can't help but smile whenever I see those little "likes" popping up on my screen! Maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions about bot farms or click farms just yet! I can't help but wonder if the whole situation would have played out differently if someone else had been the one to spot the issue, like maybe an insider instead of me!

The mods were officially asked to weigh in on the registration situation, but they’ve stayed completely silent! So, I guess we're all just left sitting here playing a guessing game. Honestly, I’m still holding onto this little shred of hope that the whole thing just somehow slipped under their radar—because the longer this silence drags on, the harder it gets to make any sense of it at all. It feels like that classic case of groupthink where everyone ends up paralyzed by a sort of collective hesitation, passing the buck and practicing self-censorship until nobody wants to take the heat. Just total radio silence!

Honestly, that’s a huge part of why I’m sticking with the writing—even if all that recent nonsense really rubbed me the wrong way—because I just feel like it might make things a little easier for them to finally open up and find their voice!

Oh my goodness, can you believe how incredibly hard—and, I might add, how wonderfully benevolent—I am trying to actually grasp the point you’re making here!
I honestly can’t help but laugh at myself sometimes, but I just had to share this little observation about how things can go completely unnoticed! It’s like that one tiny, invisible flaw that you swear everyone else can see, yet somehow stays totally hidden from view. It really makes you wonder about all the little things we miss in our daily lives, doesn't it?
I’m starting to get a little worked up about this too, almost as much as Lisa Hernandez3!
Even though this hits home for me on a personal level, she’s been incredibly articulate, well-reasoned, and straight to the point in all her posts over the last month. Honestly, I’m just over here popping like popcorn with pure joy because I can't believe you guys actually want to talk to us!
Honestly, this whole whining session isn't anything new, nor is it particularly special, and I really don't feel like spending too much energy on it; it's just one of those daily little gripes that we've seen a million times before and will likely see plenty more of in the future.

But hey, let's be fair—my point wasn't actually about the complaining itself, but rather about trying to stay polite and back things up with actual logic despite all the nagging.

If I could just have one sentence—what exactly is everyone getting upset about here?

[Speaking strictly for myself] I feel like this particular post falls under hate speech, but the real issue is the way the mod team is acting like a bunch of overbearing busybodies (similar to how they deleted that thread over on the General Discussion board), and the fact that the rest of the mods are staying silent even after multiple requests for clarification, which is what's truly controversial and should at least be open for debate in our main discussion area.

There are probably a thousand other issues, most of which I've already pointed out in previous threads, but if I have to boil it down to just one sentence... well, whatever it is, I won't ramble on forever, so thanks for coming to ask me! And I mean that sincerely, no irony intended, thanks for checking in.

And I mean that sincerely, no irony intended, thanks for checking in.

Just one humble observation. I am truly sorry if this disappoints you, but I firmly believe that moderators—and even administrators—are under no obligation to provide explanations for every single inquiry directed at them. Aside from instances where they are directly accountable to a superior (for example, a moderator typically answers to an admin, and admins answer to the owner or whoever sits at the top of the hierarchy), they shouldn't have to justify every move. The reason is quite simple: there is currently no mechanism in place to protect them from users who might exploit such a right for their own ends. I serve as both an administrator and a moderator for two different online forums, and I found myself deeply invested in this particular discussion (I read through the entire thread started by Silaj) purely because it helps me improve my own approach to the job. I have some experience under my belt, so I understand the weight of what it means to delete someone's post. It is a shame that not everyone can empathize with that feeling. 🙂 Whenever I’ve made a decision like that, I’ve honestly never felt it was my duty to provide an explanation. To be perfectly candid, the posts I deleted were nothing more than unpleasant noise—they weren't exactly pleasant to read—so I didn't give the matter much thought. My primary concern has always been maintaining my own integrity; I need to be certain of my own motives when deciding whether to keep or remove a particular comment. As for how others might interpret those actions? Well, you simply cannot please everyone. Some will offer praise, while others will inevitably criticize, and that is just the nature of things.

In my estimation, the controversial post being labeled as hate speech is somewhat overstated. I have revisited the content several times now; initially, I was inclined to agree that it crossed the line, but upon more careful and deliberate reading, I find myself unable to reach that same conclusion. Personally, I am unconvinced that a permanent ban is warranted, primarily because the intent behind the words remains ambiguous to me. I would prefer to let the situation mature a bit. Time will eventually reveal whether this was merely an ill-advised remark—a singular lapse in judgment—or if we are actually dealing with someone who consistently uses their platform to spread intolerance and animosity.

In my view, this entire tug-of-war is nothing short of pointless—for everyone involved. There isn’t really a compelling reason for the administration to feel the need to defend themselves here; we aren't talking about hundreds of rule-breaking posts, but rather a single instance (at least from what I witnessed) that some see as problematic while others clearly do not. Of course, I understand why some users might be looking for a more substantial response from management, but just because they haven't provided one doesn't mean we should demonize the moderators and admins simply because they didn't meet our specific demands. I truly empathize with the community members, as I am one of them, but I also have a great deal of empathy for the admin team and the mods, as I can certainly relate to their position as well.

On the other hand, I feel that being overly pedantic and nitpicking within our community is truly excessive. It is undeniably true that we all make mistakes—none of us are perfect—but I believe a person's overall attitude is far more significant than the occasional slip-up. Personally, my primary concern is that the moderators and admins aren't malicious individuals who are just itching to hand out bans, delete posts, or act completely indifferent to the community. Generally speaking, most mods will respond to a private message if they choose to, but the most vital thing is that they maintain a mature, fair-minded approach toward the members and the discussions themselves. If they happen to make an error—which, let’s be honest, is inevitable—we shouldn't go overboard in judging them (provided these errors don't become a habitual pattern, though that is a much broader conversation).

Unless there are some underlying motives being masked by the label "that post is hate speech"—meaning, unless the actual goal isn't about the content itself, which supposedly offends minority groups or underprivileged communities here in the States, but rather an attempt to attack the moderators at CNN—then I believe we are wasting far too much precious time on this single controversial post. (In all honesty, that is likely the only point I truly needed to make regarding everything that has been said.)

Matthew Grant9 said:Well... I feel like the timing just isn't quite right from an administrative standpoint! I mean, honestly, trying to use a single ten-page post as my main argument for closing this down feels a little bit silly, especially since the topic itself hasn't actually been deleted yet.
You could look at it as a real force of nature, but I also see it as a tiny crack in the door being left open, since things were allowed to progress to some extent. But hey, you know me—I’m a total optimist!
It would honestly be such a huge help if we could take a closer look at the specific topics everyone is actually debating, just to see if any real patterns or trends are starting to emerge! I just can't help but smile whenever I see those little "likes" popping up on my screen! It’s such a tiny thing, really, but honestly, seeing that little burst of digital affection truly makes my day and gives me such a wonderful little boost of energy! I guess it really comes down to whether we should dive into those specific questions right away or if it’s better to wait until things have officially kicked off! Maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions about bot farms or click farms just yet! Honestly, it might just be that there’s actually a decent number of us out here who genuinely care about this topic and want to chime in. It’s not even necessary to argue whether this was an attempt to hijack the topic, because honestly, I would have been strongly against that from the get-go! I actually found myself pushing back against certain previous examples—even some of the moderator posts—that I felt definitely crossed the line into that territory. Is it actually possible for something to fly completely under the radar at first—maybe just because things were so routine or because we were all caught up in some sudden chaos—only to suddenly make perfect sense once it’s finally spelled out in a formal complaint? I can't help but wonder if the whole situation would have played out differently if someone else had been the one to spot the issue, like maybe an insider instead of me!

The mods were officially asked to weigh in on the registration situation, but they’ve stayed completely silent! So, I guess we're all just left sitting here playing a guessing game. Honestly, I’m still holding onto this little shred of hope that the whole thing just somehow slipped under their radar—because the longer this silence drags on, the harder it gets to make any sense of it at all. It’s not like they aren't around, but maybe they're just terrified of being the first ones to speak up?

If you recall which moderators showed up to comment on Silaj's thread, you can see the similarities in their rhetoric compared to Tyndall's. To me, that is the issue. It comes down to both administrative and moderator styles—since I don't really believe there is a fixed "nature" to this kind of work. I honestly felt the outcome of that thread was predetermined, simply because I recognize those voices. That specific way of speaking has been building up here for a long time, solidifying groups that form primarily around admins who have the power to silence things. But that isn't the only way, nor the best way, to handle matters. For instance, it certainly didn't seem appropriate for the issue we're discussing right now.

mellowraven22 said:So?

In my view, that kind of approach devalues everyone whose inquiries and criticisms are actually legitimate. Legitimate based on their actual content, or even based on who is asking (considering what that person has demonstrated through their posts or their specific contributions so far). If I—as a former moderator of two sub-forums and the founder of another sub-forum on this same Forum—find myself having to defend against being lumped in with somewhat trivial user demands or lower-level questions just a few months later, and if my activities are characterized primarily by psychology and reduced to primitive emotions like "whining," then there is something fundamentally broken in the judgment and arbitration of those above me. The internet is wide, yes, and that is exactly the context I am following.

Steven Clark2 said:Just one humble observation.

(In all honesty, that is likely the only point I truly needed to make regarding everything that has been said.)

To keep it brief regarding your take—I suppose I can see both sides of this, but I don't think that's really the point here. On a more abstract level, we're talking about arbitration and supervision—the underlying frameworks that govern how content is read and evaluated. You have to factor in things like personal worldview, education levels, and a general sense of the subject matter, which naturally leads to certain stylistic preferences. When there’s a significant gap in those areas between two moderators, or between an admin and a moderator, or even an admin and a user, you end up with debates like this. And honestly, I don't think it's just people bickering for the sake of it. On a more practical level, this stems from a series of questions that weren't communicated properly to the original posters, which then triggered a whole new round of inquiries. There hasn't been any proof of an attack on the moderation team here, and frankly, I don't see a single motive for anyone involved to actually attempt something like that. What I do see, though, is the motivation behind why people are participating: they care about this community, both in terms of its internal rules and its external reputation. They've been part of this for too long—perhaps even too deeply—to just walk away now.

Lisa Hernandez3, have we actually gone over this in our DMs yet?
If you’ve finally come to terms with the fact that both arbitration and oversight exist, then just accept that both sides have done their jobs and moved on.
You can't honestly believe that throwing around threats of force is some kind of magic wand to conjure up the specific outcome you're looking for, can you?
Or do you think some poor soul in administration is going to spend their entire day sprinting around to answer the exact same question over and over again, just because you decided to rephrase it slightly differently every time??
You keep leaning on the idea of coercion as an argument, but frankly, by acting this way, you aren't leaving any room for a real conversation to happen.

Everything that needed an answer has been answered, and now I really have to ask that we drop this topic; this constant back-and-forth tugging isn't going to be accepted as a valid way to hold a discussion.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Total mess. It should've been flagged and binned immediately, but man, the ship has sailed now. Too late for that.
