Cocaine Bear (2023)

The whole Cocaine Bear situation traces back to an incident in December 1985. Some notorious drug smuggler—who also happened to be a former narcotics officer—was piloting a plane when he realized his cargo was way too heavy. In a desperate move to lighten the load, he ditched a bag full of cocaine from the aircraft.
That bag ended up right in the path of a 175-pound American black bear, which decided to eat it. The movie follows the aftermath: a bear on a drug-fueled killing spree.

That bear is basically part of American folklore at this point, and everyone knows that that bear probably kicked the bucket after running maybe fifty feet because of how much cocaine he'd swallowed😁

This whole thing sounds absolutely insane—what a wild concept for a movie. But then I see Elizabeth Banks is directing, and honestly, that doesn't exactly give me confidence that it'll be any good.

I'm gonna throw on some sweats and head to the theater with my crew to catch this—honestly, I feel like this is the only way you should even experience a movie like this. 🎉

Is this some kind of "horror" comedy? Feels like it to me.

But that's actually the whole point—it’s a wild ride, a crazy flick, and it's making a killing at the box office. A bear on cocaine... yeah, haha.

I have my doubts about whether this one is going to pull in massive profits. Honestly, it feels like movie theaters have been struggling to make real money lately, and since Banks is known for directing total blockbusters, I’m leaning towards this being a box office flop. That said, the plot itself is absolutely insane.

This is essentially the spiritual successor to the 2006 hit Snakes on a Plane. Only this time, we have Samuel L. Jackson playing a bear fueled by pure cocaine. If you can't recognize him in this role, it simply means you haven't snorted nearly enough cocaine yourselves.

The only huge red flag for me is that Banksica is directing this. Man, it’s such a shame they didn't just hire someone like Tommy Wirkol or someone with that kind of vibe instead.

What do you mean "known"? She's directed three films—one was a Netflix release, the second actually made decent money (Pitch Perfect 2), and the third was a bit of a dud (Charlie's Angels).

It really feels like one of those movies that is very, very loosely based on a true story, just like a million others out there.

Caught this one today. Overall impression? Just meh. I definitely expected more from this flick:
-the humor was pretty bad
-it’s R-rated, so there’s some explicit violence, but honestly, that’s the only redeeming quality—and even then, there wasn't nearly enough of it
-the characters were poorly written and lacked any real depth
-regret going to the theater for this one. Not worth the price of a ticket; just wait until it hits streaming
-sadly, this turns out to be the last film for Ray Liotta
-runs about 90 minutes, but it dragged in spots. I've sat through longer movies that moved much faster

This movie is pure brain candy, and that’s exactly what it aims to be. Sure, they could have dialed up the comedy, but it’s still worth a watch as is.

I was honestly worried about seeing some toxic feminism from Banksov or forced "diversity" quotas being shoved down our throats, but I didn't catch any of that (at least not from my perspective).

If they had actually hired someone to punch up the jokes—instead of walking on eggshells to avoid offending every single growing minority group out there—this would've been even better. As it stands, most of the humor is just centered on the beat-up bear.

I don't get why everyone keeps acting like this is Ray Liotta's last movie—as if he doesn't have a few more projects in post-production headed our way soon. I mean, we still have Fool's Paradise, Dangerous Waters, and April 29, 1992 to look forward to.
