Command Performance/Direct Contact (2009)

image

After hits from Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa, John Rambo), Mel Gibson (Sin City, Wrestler), and Jean-Claude Van Damme (Jean-Claude Van Damme), we’ve got another action legend stepping back into the fray—Dolph Lundgren. While we’re all waiting for his turn in The Expendables, let's kill some time by checking out two of his flicks: Command Performance and Direct Contact.

While Direct Contact feels like your standard, low-key Dolph action flick that didn't get much hype, it looks like they actually put some decent money into the production and marketing for Command Performance.

The plot of Command Performance follows a drummer and former biker who ends up rescuing a kidnapped Russian president. Dolph actually handled both the directing and the screenplay for this one.

On the flip side, Direct Contact is also set in Russia, where Dolph plays an American man stuck in a Russian prison who gets a shot at freedom if he can pull off the rescue of a kidnapped American woman.

Haha... can't believe you actually started a thread for these movies😁😁...😁I was planning on tossing them into that "From Trash to Masterpiece" thread instead.😁

Anyway... here's some stuff I stumbled upon regarding these different projects...

I think it’s about time we dedicated some space to discussing certain topics and giving a little nod to Dolph, especially since he’s one of the true old-school legends still out there. 😁 😬

Anyway, they're already deep in pre-production. Icarus posterSo, I was just wondering, where is Dolph going to play a Russian next? 😁 Here’s the breakdown of the plot: Imagine a guy who was trained from the ground up by the Russians to be the ultimate killer, now trying to navigate the impossible balancing act of being a family man. He’s caught between this high-stakes double life as a professional hitman and his quiet reality as a devoted husband and father, just trying to find a way out of the darkness..

There are also rumors floating around about... Universal Soldier 3...along with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

There are even rumors going around about... Universal Soldier 3Plus, you've got Jean-Claude Van Damme in the mix too.

I know, haha.😁Honestly, only a tiny handful of people even care about this stuff... but hey, maybe there are still some folks out there who grew up on 80s action flicks and actually enjoy a good trashy movie, haha.😁

I know about Universal Soldier 3 too... and honestly, I watch it every single day, haha.😁😁👍

It’s not just rumors—it’s actually happening. Dolph only has six days on set while Jean-Claude Van Damme is there for twenty, and John Hyams is stepping in to direct. He’s the son of Peter Hyams (the guy behind Timecop and Sudden Death), which is an interesting connection. Apparently, the kid has been doing some documentary work lately and mentioned wanting to shoot this Soldier flick in a docu-style format, similar to Cloverfield or REC. Could be pretty cool.👍

😁 😁

I'm pretty sure there are at least a few guys on this forum who live for those 80s action legends. It's not like we're all metrosexuals here, right? 😁

It isn't just rumors... they are actually filming it. The deal is that Dolph will only be on set for 6 days, while Jean-Claude Van Damme will be there for 20. It's being directed by John Hyams, the son of Peter Hyams (who did Timecop and Sudden Death). What's interesting is that the kid has mostly done documentaries lately, and he mentioned wanting to shoot this Soldier movie in a documentary style... kind of like Cloverfield or Rec. That could actually be pretty cool...👍

Seriously? I'm honestly stoked that Dolph is involved. 👍 It's such a bummer that Jean-Claude Van Damme didn't jump on board for The Expendables. 😢

By the way, Peter Hyams also directed "2010," which I personally thought was an awesome sequel to "2001," starring Roy Schneider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dulle in the lead roles.

I'm betting there are at least a few people here who actually dig those 80s action legends. Surely this isn't just a forum for metrosexuals. 😁

Seriously? It's pretty cool that Dolph jumped in. 👍 Too bad Jean-Claude Van Damme didn't take the offer to be in The Expendables. 😢

By the way, Peter Hyams also directed "2010"—which, if you ask me, was a killer sequel to "2001"—starring Roy Schneider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban, and Keir Dulle.

I know, I know... but he won't be directing Universal Soldier 3; his son John is taking the helm. Peter will just be the Director of Photography.👍

Anthony Smith3 said:Look, I know what you're thinking... but he isn't actually stepping into the director's chair for Universal Soldier 3. Instead, his son John is taking over directing duties, while Peter will be serving as the Director of Photography.👍

Yeah, got it. 😉 Just wanted to drop a quick note about Peter Hyams, in case anyone was curious about him. 😁

Looking at that first image in the OP, Dolph kind of gives off those Duke Nukem vibes to me.😁

People always brought him up whenever there was talk about turning that video game into a movie... but unfortunately, it never actually happened. Honestly though, he would've been way too hot to play Duke Nukem.😁😁

Not yet, but it could happen.😉
You remind me of Duke Nukem because of that outfit. It’s the exact same look.😁

Maybe they used Dolph as inspiration when they were designing the Duke Nukem character for the game.😁

Maybe they modeled the Duke character after Dolph when they made the game😁

Could be... though I bet Arnold was in there too. Honestly, the whole game is packed with movie nods. Like that iconic one-liner "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." which originally came from Carpenter's "They Live". Then you've got the legendary "I'm back"... a nod to "Terminator". And we can't forget "Groovy!" and "Hail to the king, baby!" from the "Evil Dead" series...👍
