Cooler Master CPU overheating issues

So, I've got an AMD Athlon II X4 sitting in my rig right now. Honestly, the stock cooler it came with is driving me nuts—way too loud. I was thinking maybe I should grab something from Cooler Master if I want some actual peace and quiet? Any ideas on which one to pick or even what kind of thermal paste would be good? My motherboard is an ASUS Prime Motherboard.

Do you think this cooler is gonna be 100% silent? I’m really aiming for a dead-silent build, just total peace and quiet inside the case. Also... I guess, can I actually mount this on my own motherboard?

Eh, I can't say for sure if everyone will agree with me—I know how these things go—but in my book, that cooler is solid. Honestly, the motherboard itself doesn't really matter here; it's all about the socket. As long as that cooler fits your processor, you're good to go. 😉

First off, please don't say "coolor master"—that isn't a thing. It’s Cooler Master, and they make coolers, power supplies, cases, and whatnot. Second, liquid cooling is expensive, and there’s really no point in putting it on an APU processor; you save those setups for high-end, enthusiast builds. If you actually have an extra $80 burning a hole in your pocket, you could always grab a 🙂

Expensive. Not worth it for your rig.
There’s no such thing as a 100% silent cooler... you're gonna hear something... it's just a matter of volume. High-end ones are quieter, obviously.

I honestly think that stock cooler just drove you crazy with its noise, and now you’re so paranoid about volume that you're obsessed with total silence. Just grab a decent, standard air cooler designed for your specific CPU—something like a Spire Kepler—and you'll be fine; it'll be quiet enough. If you really want to drop some serious cash, go for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo (assuming it actually fits in your case), or even look into a liquid cooling setup...

I’m honestly kind of nervous about hitting up the local computer shop. I want to pick up a new cooler, but I'm worried it might be as loud as my old one or just won't fit right. Mostly, I just need something to drop those CPU temps down because my PC actually shut itself off on me once. What am I even supposed to say to the guy behind the counter? I don't want him to sell me some cheap junk and then I have to sit there listening to a jet engine every time I'm playing Battlefield 3 or MW3.

Hmm... sorry, but that's a pretty weak setup for gaming. 😬 I guess you might get by with dual graphics, but if you want anything decent later on, you'll probably need to swap out both the GPU and the power supply. 😉

I'd probably go with the Zalman CNPS10X $6.75 instead.

There is absolutely no reason to worry if you just stick to the recommendations (like the ones in the links provided here). If your current stock cooler is spinning at over 3000 RPM, then everything we've discussed will be whisper-quiet by comparison and provide much better cooling performance.

BTW, this specific build isn't designed for liquid cooling (you probably don't even have a case capable of handling a water loop).
