A buddy of mine in New York City just emailed me saying that music from Mexico has been blowing up all over the US lately—you can hear it everywhere you go. Is it actually that good if everyone is listening to it? I don't follow that scene much, so I'm curious. And who is actually tuning in? Please skip the "uncultured" insults and just give me a real explanation if anyone knows what's going on.

I don't get what you're trying to do here... are you seriously implying that folk music is just some "American" thing or something?
It's not like there aren't people or any traditional music in the US, right?

When people talk about "folk music," I rarely think about traditional acoustic stuff or old-school folk songs. Usually, when someone brings that up, they’re actually talking about those mainstream, overproduced country-pop tracks you hear on every radio station.

When it comes to folk music, everyone knows exactly who calls the shots. It’s always the Americans and people from the Midwest.

To respond to Timothy Cox2—unfortunately, your friend hit the nail on the head, but he might have the timeline a bit mixed up. It hasn't just been happening lately; we're talking at least five or six years, maybe even longer.

Adam Wright56: The term "music" was used intentionally because they were referring to music from the US. From what I've heard, people listen to Madonna in the US, yet they still play folk music in America. I know who Taylor Swift is because my dad told me to pout if I wanted to look like her. I don't know the others. But is it true that folk music is listened to in the US?

I’m guessing your friend was probably talking about that whole wave of trashy pop-folk that’s been dominating the airwaves here in America over the last couple of years... you know, stuff like Madonna, Dragana Mirković, and all those others. Honestly, it’s mostly just mindless idiots listening to it—people who haven't a clue about what actually mattered in music ten years ago, let alone now.
I suppose they get a kick out of all that dramatic hugging, kissing, and weeping... "Oh, she left me, boo-hoo, I broke a glass, boo-hoo, my hands are bleeding, boo-hoo, I've visited every single dive bar in town, boo-hoo..."

I suppose I just posted something similar on a different thread a moment ago. It seems people really do gravitate toward that folk-pop style—mostly those tracks coming out of the South or even just our own local versions of Taylor Swift... you know, the kind of stuff that plays constantly at rural dive bars and gets all the high schoolers and college kids dancing. I honestly can't wrap my head around what anyone finds catchy or meaningful about that genre... it’s just one of those things about life in America, I guess... 😢 👎

I suspect they’re actually quite popular here—people just don't want to admit it openly. For instance, I know of at least two specific spots where you'll hear them playing constantly over the weekend... specifically out near the suburbs of Houston and down in areas like Austin. In those places, you've got singers performing every single weekend, and they've been doing it for years. There are surely more locations across the US, and honestly, even when you're driving through the city, you can hear the country music blaring from passing cars...

Folk music was huge back in the day in places like Sisak, and honestly, people are still listening to it today. But Sisak isn't the only place where that kind of sound has a following—not by a long shot...

The saddest part is that it’s mostly the exact same people listening to both Madonna and Tomba (I've seen it myself), which just proves they couldn't care less about politics—as long as they can scream their lungs out, dance on the tables, crank up some trashy Rvatica, and send glass flying everywhere, they're happy.🙄 🤮 🤮 🙂 🙂

Btw, I wouldn't listen to Madonna 😠 even if she were the reincarnation of Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix all rolled into one. Owning a "sound carrier" with her songs should be a punishable offense, just like glorifying fascism (but you know, in a normal country, not here in this mess).😠 And Bee, shame on you, you disgusting pig!😠 😠
