nLite (currently version 1.4 RC2) is available for download here:

http://www.nliteos.com

It allows you to overhaul standard Windows installation media. You can slipstream service packs, integrate third-party drivers, and configure various registry keys and settings that apply automatically post-installation. If you want to create a bootable disc that installs Windows exactly how you want it in just a few minutes, this is the tool for you. It’s highly effective—worth trying.

Just as nLite served as the gold standard for customizing Windows 2000, XP x86/x64, and 2003 x86/x64, vLite performs that exact same heavy lifting for Vista, making it an absolute necessity for anyone looking to slim down their OS.

Is there anything similar out there for Linux? 😁

Hmm... you talking about something akin to Microsoft? I haven't actually messed around with it myself, so I can't really speak to the specifics.

I was just messing around, but there's definitely some truth to it. 😉

Gave it a shot. Looks interesting, but I’d prefer if it could just auto-install some basic apps for me (like Chrome or AOL Instant Messenger...) since I don't see an option for that here. Is there a way to set that up or what...

It is possible. You just need some nLite add-ons to make it happen.

In nLite, you include them as hotfixes, or something along those lines.

Is it possible to install commercial software I've purchased, or am I limited strictly to the add-ons listed on this page?

I haven't messed around with the commercial version yet—just stuck to the add-ons, so 🤷 🤷

I didn't spot this thread earlier, so I guess I’m a little late to the party... just wanted to drop my two cents for anyone who happens to stumble upon this later on...

nLite is complete garbage. They churned out hundreds of different versions, and yet none of them ever actually worked the way they were supposed to...

It never delivers exactly what I need, and it never reacts the way it should...

At the end of the day, I gave up on the whole thing over a year ago...
