I finally kicked the smoking habit, but now I feel like I’m constantly bloating and holding onto water weight.

It’s been about two months since my last cigarette, and I’ve already packed on over 10 pounds!!!!

BUT—here's the kicker: I’m eating basically the exact same amount I was when I was still smoking. Apparently, my body is just deciding to hold onto all this extra fluid. I’ve actually started hitting the gym lately, but I haven't seen any results yet. Honestly, it's a nightmare—I can't even button a single pair of jeans right now! It’s awful! I haven't increased my sugar intake at all, and I’ve even made sure to eat a healthy breakfast every morning, which wasn't really a thing for me before. The main issue seems to be this constant water retention.

So, here is my question: What exactly is this "fluid" that's building up, and how do I flush it out so I can drop these 10+ pounds?

Thanks in advance to everyone for any real, practical advice you can share.

Get to a doctor right away. Fluid buildup usually means kidney issues or blood pressure problems...
It happened to my neighbor after he wouldn't quit smoking.

It could be the heart... or maybe even the liver

"I feel like I'm retaining water"

...hm...

Wait, what kind of fluid are we even talking about here? How can you be sure it’s actually "fluid"? If someone were being a total smartass, they might just tell you to go take a leak.

Sorry, but this is honestly just way too vague to go off of.

Are you actually swollen or dealing with edema? If so, where exactly? Did you wake up feeling puffy, or does it build up as the day goes on? And have you actually seen a doctor yet if you're out here claiming it's "allegedly fluid"... etc, etc... give us a little more detail to work with...

When I quit smoking, I ended up gaining about 20 pounds of "liquid weight" because everyone convinced me I shouldn't eat any more than usual. But once the cravings for cigarettes died down and I stopped mindless snacking, those 20 pounds just vanished.
Jokes aside, Scott Allen10, you made a good point about explaining exactly where that "liquid" tends to settle.

You're just talking about it like it's nothing. Seriously, go see a doctor. It sounds like it could be some kind of internal inflammation. They'll probably just need to drain the fluid out for you.

Honestly, this whole thing is written so vaguely it's hard to follow.

I have a close friend who deals with major water retention issues, and it isn't even like she's getting localized edema or anything—she just wakes up and finds out she's gained like nine pounds by the evening. I've seen it happen with my own eyes. It's not like she has these weird swollen spots; she just looks significantly heavier from her face down to her toes by the end of the day. She went to see doctors and everything came back perfectly normal on the tests. To make matters worse, her symptoms get way more intense during her PMS, making her feel twice her actual size. It's not even real weight gain because it just vanishes by morning, just like it appeared the night before.
The poor woman is incredibly frustrated by the whole ordeal, which is totally understandable, but right now she's just fighting a losing battle against it.

Now you guys are starting to make me nervous.

It’s just that I feel so bloated—but it's like the water retention is hitting everywhere at once. I've put on weight all over... my stomach, hips, chest, arms, shoulders, legs... it's like I'm swelling up in every direction.

Honestly, I don't think it's anything serious or medical; it feels more like that classic fluid buildup you get after you finally kick the smoking habit. That's what everyone tells me, anyway—since there isn't any other logical explanation given that I'm not even eating more than I used to.

Back again to pitch this dandelion tea 😁—it’s great for shedding water weight, tightening things up, and acting as a tonic. It can even help with weight loss, plus there are plenty of other perks if you bother to read through the details here:

Look, you really shouldn't play games with your health like this. Seeking advice on a forum when you're dealing with symptoms this serious is just asking for trouble, because honestly, nobody online can replace a real doctor.

It could be anything—kidney issues, heart problems, liver failure...
If it's your heart, you're looking at a potential heart attack or fluid building up in your lungs, which means you could end up suffocating in your sleep... and if it's your liver, we're talking about liver cancer, at which point nothing matters anyway because there's no fix for that.

And I'm not a doctor... even if I were, I’d probably just tell you to get straight to your physician... (I'm only weighing in because I've seen a few people close to me go through stuff exactly like this)

Hi everyone.

I’ve been tightening up my diet and hitting the gym three times a week.
The weight loss is starting, but yesterday I felt incredibly bloated. When I stepped on the scale before my workout, I was actually up by a couple of pounds compared to Thursday—even though I haven't touched the junk in the pantry 😁 .

People told me it’s just standard water retention. It makes sense; after a quick fifteen-minute session in the sauna, I dropped about 0.9 lbs. Despite the number on the scale, I’ve already lost about an inch and a half off my waist after five workouts.

So, what’s the move here? I keep my sodium intake very low, so salt isn't the culprit. I stay hydrated, sometimes drinking up to 2.5 liters a day. Is this one of those "fighting fire with fire" situations where I need to drink even more water to flush it out, or what?

Thanks... clearly I didn't use the search engine quite right...
And there’s never enough bickering in this place to keep things interesting. 😁

Hey, does anyone know where I can go in Chicago for private abdominal water drainage?
