Denzel Washington was born on December 28, 1954, in Mount Vernon, New York. His father, Dillwyn Denzel Washington, worked as a minister and was constantly busy from morning until night, while his mother, Lennis, ran her own hair salon; because of their schedules, the three children—the eldest daughter Lorica, Denzel, and his younger brother David—probably only saw them for an hour or two a day when they finally returned home late at night.

Throughout a long and storied career in film, he has pretty much accomplished everything one could hope for. This includes winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the 1989 film "Glory," various other accolades, and even some lighter recognition, such as being named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine.

Alongside a marriage that seems to have brought him a great deal of happiness, Denzel Washington has continued to shine professionally; in the 1989 film "Glory" directed by Edward Zwick, he played Sergeant Trip, a performance that I guess both audiences and critics found deeply moving, earning him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in a role many thought might be out of reach for Black actors at the time.

Even though audiences were used to seeing him strictly as a good guy, usually playing heroic or righteous characters, many people feel that his most significant role was actually playing a corrupt cop in "Training Day" (2001), a turn that the Academy recognized immediately by awarding him the Oscar for Best Actor that same year.

He’s an absolute powerhouse—honestly one of my all-time favorites. I feel like I can turn on almost any movie he’s in and just be entertained, but if I had to pick the heavy hitters, it would have to be Fallen, Man on Fire, or Training Day—which, if I remember correctly, actually earned him an Oscar. Even his newer stuff, like Unstoppable, is just top-tier. And man, when he teams up with Ridley Scott's brother, Tony, they really cook up something special.

Yeah, I think I forgot to mention that one too, which I also thought was a great film. 😁

In my opinion, his standout performances are in The Hurricane and John Q.

Al Pacino holds one Oscar and has nearly half the total awards of this incredible actor, who boasts two Oscars and almost double the accolades. 🤷

A truly great actor... I suppose he lacks the sheer volume of legendary films that Al Pacino possesses, yet Pacino himself has fewer awards and one less Oscar than Denzel. It makes me wonder why things turned out this way. I guess the competition used to be much more intense back then, both in terms of the quality of filmmaking and the caliber of actors; perhaps that's why icons like Tom Hanks or Denzel ended up with two Oscars and nearly twice as many awards. It feels like better movies were being made in that era, which might explain why Pacino serves as such a perfect example.

Denzel Washington is an exceptional actor, though I suppose he tends to approach every role with a somewhat similar energy—still, his talent is undeniable. That said, I don't quite see how he holds up alongside Al Pacino.

True, but he's just in a supporting role there, so he isn't quite as standout.

He always seems to land in the same types of roles, and while his movies are consistently solid, good, or even very good, I just don't feel like he hits that absolute peak of greatness, at least in my personal opinion. Those are my main gripes, but regardless, he is such a talented actor that you always know exactly what you're getting, and while it might be hard to be disappointed, it can be just as tough to be truly blown away...☕

I’ll throw in Crimson Tide since some of you seem to have forgotten it. When it comes to Zela as an actor, he definitely follows a certain pattern. Given the types of films he does—especially the ones with Scott directing—that approach actually makes sense.

Still, I’m waiting for a movie where Zela pulls a complete 180, much like DeNiro did in Stardust. He doesn't need to wear a dress, but something new, something wild would be refreshing.

Either way, he was a legend then and remains one now.

He’s a solid actor. Unfortunately, lately, he's fallen into the same trap as so many other actors, settling for a string of mediocre projects. It feels like he's drifted into a gray area of questionable choices where the roles just haven't hit the mark—looking at stuff like Unstoppable, Deja Vu, or The Taking of Pelham.

There are just a few African American actors who managed to transcend that whole gritty, gangsta hip-hop persona—you know, that aggressive, rap-influenced attitude you see in guys like Ice-T or Cube. It’s a rare thing to find someone who moves past those stereotypes entirely.
