Does Diet Coke actually make you gain weight, and how bad is it for you really?

Basically, if you're already drinking soda, is it better to go with Diet or just stick to the regular stuff?

I know that. But does Diet Coke actually help you stay thin? 😁

young.but.dead said:It's got less sugar than regular soda, but it's still basically poison... honestly, you're better off drinking alcohol than a Coke—I’d suggest wormwood instead.👍

Poison???? Less sugar???? It doesn't even have sugar, let alone "less" of it... and as far as being toxic goes, look at the state of things in America, Asia, and all over Europe... people have been getting poisoned for decades because Diet Coke has been around since 1982 and it's already the third most popular soda in the world. Seriously, people are dropping like flies...😉
If you actually look at what's in it, besides the zero calories, you've just got caffeine (which is way less than what you'd get in a cup of coffee, or even tea, really), caramel coloring, aspartame, phosphoric acid, citric acid, sodium, CO2, and good old fashioned water. They even make a caffeine-free version if someone is really into that... I mean, which part of that is actually "poisonous" anyway?

It’s not even about "less," it’s basically zero... practically nothing. Just drink it and stop worrying, it isn't some kind of poison. It's just one of those things where if people repeat a lie enough times, everyone starts believing it's gospel...

Coke destroys your liver, your teeth, hell, even your bones...😲

Well, here’s the ingredient list right in front of you, so why don't you be a dear and point out exactly which part is doing all that damage?

Look, McDonald's isn't inherently toxic, and just because a massive crowd of people devours it because it’s cheap doesn't mean the food itself is some kind of poison... It's like you look at everything through this lens where every single substance is a threat. Seriously, try drinking 10 liters of water in one sitting and let's see how much damage that does to you.

Phosphoric acid is actually a weak acid, and once it hits your stomach—where you've already got hydrochloric acid sitting there at a pH of 1, which, by the way, is a incredibly strong acid—it basically acts more like a base... it just buffers the acidity of your gastric juices so it doesn't even reach your bones, plus it's used as a preservative in tiny amounts. Besides, phosphate ions are present in every single living cell in the human body anyway, so it's really not doing any harm at all.
Moving on...

That’s a pretty oversimplified way of looking at it, honestly... I mean, even breakdown products from things we consider totally "normal," like amino acids or sugars, can be carcinogenic under the right circumstances, yet they don't just trigger cancer in everyone. Aspartame is perfectly fine in moderate amounts, and obviously, it isn't causing cell death via extreme excitement when you're sipping on a Diet Coke, because if it were, people would be dropping dead everywhere. For over thirty years, millions upon millions of people have been drinking it, and there's zero evidence of those supposed consequences, yet people still insist that everything in a Coca-Cola is pure poison. It's just not true, nothing more and nothing less...
It would be a real interesting experiment if someone just extracted every single plant compound from wormwood, concentrated them all into one shot, and then we could see if that doesn't cause cancer too. Same goes for beer, wine, whatever... plant extracts always contain some kind of dangerous substances if you look hard enough.

Coca-Cola is garbage. 🙂
I mean, you should probably avoid any version of it—it's a bit much that people don't opt for something higher quality instead of this junk.
Whether we're talking about the Diet version, which supposedly has almost zero calories per serving, or the regular stuff—which is just as bad, except it's also loaded with sugar.

Does it cause weight gain? Not the Diet version—at least based on the nutrition facts, I guess.

If you’re absolutely going to grab a Coke, just get a Diet instead—at least there's less sugar involved. Honestly, regular Coke is basically liquid poison. They overhype it in commercials just to trick people into buying more and poisoning themselves. You're much better off sticking to unsweetened fruit juices or non-carbonated drinks.

Honestly, you should steer clear of every single version available—why settle for that junk when there are actually decent, high-quality drinks out there that you could be sipping instead?!

Last year, my doctor actually suggested I have some Coke!

I spent ten days on an IV drip—which completely threw my system out of whack—and wouldn't you know it, the doctor told me that a little bit of Coke might actually help balance my electrolytes back out. 🙂

Look, I’m not claiming Coke is as healthy as a fresh lemonade, but it’s certainly not pure poison either.

I'm not claiming it's as healthy as lemonade, but it isn't exactly poison either.

For God's sake, it's not freaking poison.

Look.
Here is my experience and why I finally stopped drinking that garbage.
Basically, I had this bowl with some nasty residue stuck halfway down the bottom. I tried scrubbing the crap out of it with everything I had—including, mind you, Clorox.
And that stubborn buildup wouldn't budge. I even tried soaking the bowl in water mixed with Clorox—nothing.
I wanted to toss the bowl, but I liked it too much. That’s why I worked so hard to clean it.
But I didn't throw it away; I just kept it.
Then, during a period when I was drinking a lot of Coca-Cola, a bottle broke. There was a little bit of Coca-Cola left, so I poured it into that bowl (the one from earlier 😁).
Within a few hours, that Coca-Cola—the stuff people claim is "not that harmful"—dissolved that residue. Seriously, the residue that even Clorox couldn't touch was melted by the stuff people ingest every single day. It's unbelievable.

Regarding the doctor. Hmm. My cardiologist told me I was underweight and basically called me crazy because I don't eat meat—absolute nonsense, right? Is that the ultimate truth? Not necessarily. While it doesn't necessarily prove my theory about Coca-Cola, it certainly doesn't help the argument that it's okay to drink.

My other issue is with Diet Coke. Once, after having just a tiny bit, I broke out in hives all over my body and face—it was unreal. Usually, I'm incredibly resilient, and yeah, it was 100% due to the Coca-Cola. Even on that Diet crap, the label suggests not consuming more than a liter a day—and if the manufacturer is saying that, you know there's a problem...

So now, someone is going to tell me this is fine to drink? Look, it won't kill you—that's a fact—but I see no reason to drink it. There are no vitamins, no minerals, nothing useful.
It's trash.

Now, don't get me wrong—I’m not out here acting like some fanatic advocate for Coke—I certainly don't drink it all the time—but I think there's a legitimate point to it. Like you mentioned earlier (that "clearing out the sediment" effect), it can actually be quite helpful for digestion sometimes—especially if you've been stuck on an IV drip for ten days straight and desperately need to replenish your electrolytes because you haven't been able to keep anything down due to constant vomiting. So, no, my doctor isn't some total lunatic; I'm pretty sure she knows exactly why she recommended it to me.

Coke is actually great when a kid has diarrhea.😁

Honestly😁—some guy told me this once (not a doctor, mind you), and I just laughed him off—but when my little one was dealing with a stomach bug for two days, refusing everything else, I gave them some Coke. It cleared up by that same day.👍

I’ve never been much of a fan of soda in general, and I certainly don't have any love lost on Coca-Cola, whether you're drinking the regular stuff or a Diet Coke...
I use the word "opinion" because I can't exactly make definitive scientific claims about Diet Coke here, but my gut tells me there's no way a drink can truly have zero calories like they claim...

driftinggull13, since you brought up McDonald's, you really ought to sit down and watch the movie Super Size Me before you start sharing your conclusions; if you can't find a copy somewhere, I'll just burn a copy for you. 🙂

The ingredients are just zero calories, caffeine (which is actually less than what you get in coffee, especially tea), caramel coloring, aspartame, phosphoric acid, citric acid, sodium, CO2, and good old water. They even have a caffeine-free version if that's more your thing. I don't see which part of that is actually "toxic."

QUESTION: why are Americans, and more and more people everywhere else, becoming so overweight then?
...It's not "toxic" per se, but it is definitely unhealthy!
..Caffeine (that much is common knowledge) messes with your calcium... plus it flushes fluids out of your system, taking valuable minerals and vitamins along with it! (That's why you really need to drink a glass of mineral water alongside your coffee)
...Phosphorus is what makes kids who drink Coke super hyperactive... and it's not just kids either!
Plus—aspartame—it tastes sweet, which automatically triggers your body to process the other sugars already in your system...! After that, you naturally end up craving sweets or hydration... because just like salt, our bodies need sugar to function properly... kind of like fuel for an engine...
Aspartame almost cost me my life... once I stopped using aspartame/saccharin, I dropped 5 pounds almost instantly!... Now I only sweeten things with real sugar—but in moderation! (Like, half a teaspoon max)... Just stick to regular Coke if it's your treat, but watch your health and your figure—focus more on the fat and oil intake!
Best, 👋

Cole is carbonated, and I guess there's some theory about it helping clear uric acid from the blood if your kidneys are acting up. That's basically the only reason a doctor would suggest drinking it just to "balance out electrolytes"... total bullshit though...

Maybe you could have just grabbed an isotonic sports drink to get those electrolytes back. Honestly, I think that would've been a way better call.

As for the sweeteners in Cole, I'm pretty sure they're terrible for your liver... and let's be real, Cole itself isn't exactly great for your liver either... which makes Diet Coke ultra-bad for your liver... at least it doesn't make you gain weight, I suppose.
