I’ve been noticing a massive surge in big-budget biographical dramas lately. It feels like every time I turn on the TV or check a festival lineup, there's another prestigious production about a legendary figure from the past. Sometimes they are incredible, but a lot of the time, it feels like studios are just playing it safe by leaning on established names to guarantee an awards season run.
Personally, I find myself getting a bit fatigued by it. Don't get me wrong, I love a good character study, but there’s a fine line between a film that truly explores a person's soul and one that just feels like a polished resume of their life achievements. I miss the days when original screenplays felt like they had a fighting chance against the "great man" narratives that seem to dominate the prestige circuit now.
Do you guys think we're entering an era where original stories are being pushed aside for these heavy-hitting biographical epics, or is there still room for both?
