Dog or cat bites...

So, I was just messing around with my brother, pretending to pin him down, when my dog suddenly loses it thinking he needs to protect him. He lunges at me and bites my hand... so I just said "fine" and went to sit at my computer.

Then I look down and realize he actually broke the skin. There's this weirdly shaped bump, maybe about 2cm wide, kind of basket-colored, but right where he bit me, it's turning purple.

Should I be worried about this, or will it just go away?

If I were you, I'd start by disinfecting that wound. Just grab some sterile gauze and wrap it up properly. Honestly, though, your best bet is probably heading to a doctor. But if that’s not an option right now, maybe swing by a CVS or Walgreens and ask the pharmacist for a recommendation—they usually have those antiseptic sprays that work wonders.

I remember this one time a random dog bit me—it actually broke the skin, too—and I had to run out for a tetanus shot, and then I lost track of how many times I ended up at the local clinic for those rabies shots they give you in increasing intervals. I can't even tell you exactly how many it was, maybe five or seven, something like that.

Well, it was some stray dog out past the outskirts of Chicago, and I figure that basically means you’re automatically getting the rabies shot anyway.

I spent the whole time applying alcohol compresses—just soaking gauze and holding it against the wound. It felt incredible at night once I finally pulled the covers back. 😬 🙂
The bruise was this weird, nauseating shade of greenish-purple-blue-red. 😁 😁
It was massive. 😲
And I’ve still got the scars from the stitches. 😲

If we were talking about some random stray dog—you know, one that’s impossible to track down, can't be put in quarantine, just a total wildcard—then sure, the location wouldn't mean a thing.
But they asked me specifically where this took place, and since they wanted the full story, I had to lay out all the details of what went down.

I went back and checked what I actually wrote,😁 and it wasn't about being outside of NYC, it was about the fact that it was an unknown dog (that's the specific wording used).

I didn't take the whole ordeal particularly seriously to begin with, though the doctor basically forced my hand, and then the madness started.
First, they flagged me at the emergency room, then they sent me over to the rabies clinic, and then they interrogated me and were actually yelling at me to be grateful that I didn't have to pay for the vaccine myself.

That wasn't even the worst part, though; a few years later, my own dog gave me a much harder time.😲

Regarding the neighborhood situation, we have some strays hanging around my block; sometimes an entire pack shows up, hiding out in the bushes and barking at passersby.
I’ve honestly never heard of them actually biting anyone.

Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong, but I don't really think those strays are all that dangerous. Generally speaking, they don't bother anyone who leaves them alone—they just keep their distance and go about their business. At least, that's how it's always seemed to me.

The vast majority of dogs that actually cause trouble and bite people are usually pets that belong to someone somewhere. 😢

Now, playing around with a dog is a whole different story, and that can happen any time.
A friend of mine actually had a little puppy nip her on the nipple while she was giving it a bath. 😱
