Greetings, everyone.

I have a brief inquiry regarding a recent piercing; I had to get my ear re-pierced today because the old hole had completely closed up, and frankly, the specific aftercare protocol has slipped my mind—specifically, how long one is required to wear the initial earring before it can be safely swapped out.

If my memory serves me correctly, there is a strict period during those first few days where removing the jewelry is strictly forbidden, followed by a stage where you periodically remove it to clean everything thoroughly while still relying on that same piece.

Could someone please provide a quick refresher on the specific durations for each phase of this process?

Much appreciated.

Why didn't you just ask the piercer who did your ear? But whatever... they say wait about a week, but I always stick with one for two or three weeks... once it heals up properly, then you swap out the piercing jewelry! As for cleaning it daily, some people do, some don't. That's really up to you...

Because we got so deeply entangled in a conversation about those $1000 earrings, I completely lost my train of thought and simply forgot. It took me another twenty minutes and a few miles down the road before it finally clicked back into place. Honestly, that idiot 😵

Anyway, thanks!

I didn't see anything about this in the search bar, so sorry if I missed it... But honestly, I've tried getting my ears pierced at least three times now, and every single time, something goes wrong. When I was a kid, I took my earrings out way too early and the holes just closed up. Then, the second time, I tried wearing some cheap-ass jewelry—like, before the two-week mark—and they got super inflamed. The third time, I even went for titanium, and they still ended up swelling up... So, I guess I'm looking for your experiences—is there any point in trying a fourth time? Or if they get irritated once, is it just going to happen every single time? Maybe I should try a different metal or something.. 🤷

So, I recently went and got my ears pierced—again—and honestly? It’s the exact same old story. Like, I don't even know what the deal is anymore. I mean, yeah, things have calmed down for a second, but if I don't keep something in there constantly, my holes just close up immediately. It's such a pain.

I’ve got 14 piercings in my ears—and honestly, I don’t even bother with them anymore. It’s always the same story: things get inflamed because of some random metal sensitivity. Believe it or not, I actually reacted to gold. Eventually, it settles down, but you have to be disciplined. You need to clean them with alcohol constantly and be extremely careful about how often you're taking them in and out. In my experience, you can never go wrong with surgical steel, provided you're obsessive about disinfecting everything.

Once they’ve fully healed—and that only happens if you have the patience to actually take care of them—you won't deal with any more drama.

I’ve had my ears pierced since I was a little girl. For the longest time, I stuck strictly to gold hoops, but one time I tried wearing some cheap costume jewelry and had a massive allergic reaction... honestly, it was such a nightmare to get it to clear up.
Fast forward a couple of years, and I went back to wearing gold, which worked perfectly fine without any drama.
However, about two years ago, I decided to get two more piercings on each lobe. Since then, they've been acting up a bit—they aren't exactly red or anything, but there's this constant, slight inflammation where a little fluid leaks out periodically, and crusting happens quite often.
At this point, though, I’ve mostly gotten used to it; it doesn't really bother me anymore.
My rule of thumb is to avoid messing with them too much, because if you start fidgeting with the piercings, they just get irritated and the swelling gets even worse.
That’s certainly been my experience.
So, I just take my earrings out occasionally to give the lobes a good wash with soap.
I assume most people probably wash themselves daily anyway... haha! But personally, I make sure to take my earrings out and clean everything thoroughly at least twice a week.

I find myself returning to this space with a rather significant predicament, and I would be profoundly grateful if anyone here has navigated a similar ordeal.

Long before my ear became a site of such persistent irritation—roughly five or six years ago—I was able to wear costume jewelry without any undue consequence. However, when I originally had my ears pierced during my previous post on this subject, I awoke the following morning to find my ear twice its normal size and found myself being treated at an emergency room in Chicago. At that time, I simply removed the earring, took a course of penicillin just to be safe, and applied compresses until the inflammation finally subsided.
Because I possess a genuine desire to have pierced ears—as I find earrings quite aesthetically pleasing, for whatever it's worth 😁—I consulted my physician regarding preventative measures to avoid infection during a future piercing attempt. The woman was visibly stunned by the question, clearly perceiving it as medically irrelevant, which frankly left me feeling utterly dismissed.🙄 I suppose it is all quite futile.
Fine then, I decided I would manage the situation independently.
I returned to the same jeweler where the initial piercing occurred, and the staff there advised me against gold, suggesting instead that I opt for gold-plated surgical steel to avoid complications. We developed a theory that the gold itself might have been substandard, though I did test this by moving the earring to my other ear, which showed no reaction, implying the metal composition was likely acceptable. They also recommended a specific antibiotic ointment to use during the initial days of healing.
I proceeded with the piercing around April and purchased Betrion ointment as instructed. To my frustration, the wound refused to heal properly. It only seemed to close when I kept the earring perfectly stationary, but the moment I attempted to switch to a different piece, the area bled profusely, forcing me to abandon the idea entirely. I waited. Eventually, while vacationing on the coast, I managed to insert an earring a few weeks ago, and everything seemed fine. Following that success, I tried wearing costume jewelry on two separate occasions about ten days ago, making sure to disinfect everything, revert to surgical steel, and apply the Betrion.
Yesterday, I accidentally tugged on my ear and realized it was painful. While there was no redness, upon inspecting the back of the lobe, I discovered it had become quite purulent. I removed the earring, cleaned the area, dealt with considerable bleeding, expressed the pus, applied the Betrion, and replaced the earring. Despite these efforts, the infection persists and the pain remains, albeit slightly diminished than yesterday.

Does anyone have experience with this or perhaps a suggestion on how to proceed? I am truly determined to have these piercings, yet I am at a complete loss as to why my body reacts so violently. I even had two additional piercings in that same ear—one in the cartilage and one at the junction leading to the cartilage—and I simply cannot fathom what is happening.🤷

Any assistance?

(My apologies for the verbosity; I felt it necessary to provide a thorough account.)

God, my pierced ears are absolutely trashed, like, a million times over
I used to have eight piercings, and now? I’ve got nothing. I’m probably the only person left on Earth dealing with these constant, nagging infections in my earlobes
And here we go again—the left one is acting up and inflamed once more

uuuuurrrrrrggggghhhhhhh 😱

I’ve been there. I can't say for certain, but you might be allergic to the specific metal used in those tiny posts or hooks on costume jewelry. Personally, I can't touch cheap jewelry at all—not even metal headbands or belts with metal buckles. Your best bet is probably sticking to solid gold or sterling silver. I heard about a trick where you coat the metal part in clear nail polish to create a barrier, but I haven't tried it myself, so I'm not sure if it actually works. Or, maybe try wearing nothing but high-quality gold for a long stretch until the area is completely healed; that might help prevent future infections.

I am honestly stumped, because logically, if I were truly allergic, the reaction should be present in both ears, yet that is precisely what is bothering me; one ear accepts the earring without any incident, while the other reacts violently following the most recent piercing.

thanks.

Ugh, tell me about it. Only my left side gives me trouble too. It can't be an allergy—if it were, it would hit both sides. Feels more like I just hit a weird acupuncture point when I was getting pierced.

The piercing was done in the precise spot where my old dimple used to be.😁

How on earth do you manage your inflammations?

Hell no, man. I’m losing my mind here.😬
I just leave the rings out for a few days until it heals. When it gets inflamed, it hurts so damn much I can't even get the jewelry through the piercing.

Billie Eilish, wait—I totally missed that part about it only being one ear! My bad. Honestly, I’m stumped now. It’s possible one side just heals way slower than the other, making it a bit more of a magnet for infections. If I were you, though, I’d stick strictly to solid gold jewelry for a while. It’s much gentler on the skin, and honestly, once you switch to gold, things should start looking a lot better.

I wasn't quite sure which sub this belonged in, but I figured the health section was my best bet.

So, basically, I'm thinking about piercing my own ear at home.

(that spot right above the flower)
Is this even something I can realistically do myself?
And is there a real risk involved, especially since it's so close to the cartilage?

You can't do this on your own 👎

Just go to a professional tattoo shop; pick out the jewelry you want there and let a pro handle the piercing for you. 🙂🙂
If you try it yourself, you're just asking for an infection, and then you'll be screaming "help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

It’s not really an issue for me; I've done this kind of thing before 😉
I have my sterile needle and jewelry ready, I just wanted to check if it's safe to pierce here since the skin is pretty thin and close to the cartilage

Hey everyone. So, I want to get both ears pierced, but I’ve got this annoying issue. Back when I was a kid—maybe 7 or 8 years ago—I got my ears pierced with one of those piercing guns. Everything seemed fine then, but the holes closed up almost instantly, like within two or three weeks. Now I’m just left with these little scars. My mom keeps telling me I shouldn't bother because my ears will just heal over immediately. Is she actually onto something here, or is she just talking nonsense? Like, can I even get this done? My ears look totally normal, so I have no clue why she’s being so dramatic about it. Thanks in advance. 😉

You can definitely get them pierced, obviously 😍
you just have to wear stainless steel earrings, you know, the medical grade stuff, until they fully heal, and after that, you can wear whatever you want! if you've got a decent pain tolerance, you could honestly just do it yourself at home or ask someone who isn't a total wimp 😂
I ended up doing mine by myself 👍
