Endocrinology Lab

So, I’m 18 and just had my first real appointment with a gynecologist. Long story short, she told me I have PCOS and that I need to get some hormone testing done at an endocrinology lab. When I asked her where I could actually go to do this, she wasn't exactly helpful—honestly, she kind of snapped at me and just muttered that those labs are located in certain hospitals. Since my period started yesterday, and apparently these tests have to be done on day 3, 4, or 5, I’m thinking I should head out tomorrow. I tried looking up labs online, but everything is so confusing and overwhelming that I figured I'd just ask you guys instead. I was thinking about heading over to Mayo Clinic, but I have no clue if I should go first thing in the morning, if I need to fast, or just how the whole process works. Anyway, if anyone has any advice at all, please let me know. Every little bit helps!

Rib, it's the main building, basement level... at least I don't think they've moved yet. You shouldn't need an appointment, and the wait is usually pretty short. However, if you go to the clinic over on Vinogradska, you definitely need to call ahead.

I went to the Mayo Clinic for some hormone bloodwork. You don't even need an appointment. They take samples from 7 to 10 AM. Results come back in a few days.

I suppose I am a bit late to this conversation, but better late than never... I recently found myself facing the exact same dilemma because I don't live in Washington, D.C., yet I desperately needed an endocrinology lab. I called the local municipal hospital, where some rather brusque woman saw fit to lecture me on why I hadn't made an appointment beforehand... quite condescending, really. However, I eventually decided to try the Mayo Clinic, and they actually took me in without any prior scheduling at all. If I recall correctly, they operate on a walk-in basis from 7:00 to 10:00 AM... It is absolutely vital to have your hormones tested on the third day of your cycle. I have no idea why anyone would suggest the fourth or fifth day when the standard medical practice is strictly the third... I have been doing this for nearly a decade now, and not a single gynecologist has ever suggested anything other than the third day.

I went in and did mine about a month ago—first on day 3 and then again on day 21—without any hormone prescriptions, so I'm pretty sure you can just walk in like that. You should probably look up their office number online first, though. Just give them a call to confirm everything before you head out there. It’s better to be prepared and know exactly what's going on rather than showing up and realizing you have to drive halfway across town to some other clinic because you didn't check first.
