It’s true that I don’t hang around this forum very often, but from what I can see, nobody seems to be talking about this particular band. Does anyone else here actually listen to Europe? Personally, I think they’re fantastic. Tracks like "Rock the Night," "Talk to Me," "Carrie," "Prisoners in Paradise," and "Countdown" are absolutely phenomenal in my book. I'll admit, they aren't quite the powerhouse they used to be, but even their *Secret Society* album from last year isn't half bad—especially songs like "Always the Pretenders" and "Devil Sings the Blues." They were easily one of the premier rock bands of the 80s, and I really feel they deserve a spot in our discussions here.👍

Nothing beats good old-fashioned cock rock. That 80s trash is actually my favorite kind of garbage. 🙂

They first got together back in 2003 and put out two albums that were nothing to write home about, though they weren't exactly terrible either (certainly far from bad)... I honestly can't wrap my head around this Discovery release, but I haven't had a spare second to actually sit down and figure it out since I'm heading out for a big New Year's Eve bash.........

So, we're talking about that legendary band from back when the world was basically split down the middle between Europe fans and Bon Jovi fans.

They have this pretty weird, paradoxical reputation here in the States. Most people act like they can't stand them, yet nobody can actually name a single track besides "TFC" or "Carrie." And then, of course, you hear everyone saying, "Man, if they ever toured, I'd definitely catch them in Chicago."🤷

What do you guys think? Would you actually show up to see Europe live?

Man, that group definitely had a more feminine vibe than even Justin Bieber... I still remember when they first broke onto the scene—right around the time their big showdown hit the top of the charts—but unfortunately, it wasn't exactly the "final showdown" everyone expected. Some critics even went so far as to label them heavy metal, haha... which is honestly a bit of a stretch, don't you think?

It feels like Europe took a bit of a detour once they started working with TFC. Don't get me wrong, that record and the two following it are still solid, but I really wish they’d just stuck to that raw direction they nailed in their first two albums...

I don't know, I have to disagree with you there.
In my book, TFC—and especially the follow-ups OOTW and PiP—were the absolute peak of their career, though I will say their 2009 Last look AT Eden was also REALLY solid.
It seems like the people who constantly dismiss them as trash usually haven't listened to anything beyond TFC and Carrie, which is a shame because Europe was a damn good band.
Towers callin', open Your Heart, Just The begining , ninja, Ready or not , Girl fra Lebanon, Prisoners in Paradise, All or nothing...
From those first two eras, I’d definitely single out Scream of Anger, on broken wings, and Dance The Night away.

I actually found myself pretty pleasantly surprised when I sat down to dive into their full discography. Honestly, Joey Tempest is easily the best vocalist to ever come out of that whole glam metal era, and "In the Future to Come" is hands down their best track. If I had to guess, I’d say we can expect a new album from them sometime later this year.

Personally, I think they're pretty solid. No complaints from me 🙂 But for me, it doesn't really scream heavy or thrash metal. It feels more like hard rock or maybe even glam metal...

I suspect they’ll never quite shake off that lingering MTV syndrome from back when glam, hair, and pop metal were practically everywhere—which is probably why people here (and likely much wider) tend to dismiss them as just another mediocre act 😁. Plus, you have to factor in that somewhat soft, teen-oriented image they carried through the mid-80s, along with Norum gradually moving away from the sound due to the increasing reliance on keyboards.

That said, I’ve actually found myself gravitating toward their earlier material much more as time goes on. As for Tempest, there isn't really much to say—just an incredible vocalist, period.

Who’s even talking about thrash? Lol... On those first two albums, they definitely had more of a heavy/power metal sound.

Europe is a killer band made up of seriously talented people—they always have been. Even back in their hair metal phase, they could outplay those generic glam acts with actual melody and power. Honestly, the fact they drifted into softer territory with TFC was mostly just down to an opportunistic manager and their own youthful naivety—I mean, they were barely in their twenties at the time,

This whole era from 2004 onwards really cements them as a legit, high-quality band, though hardly anyone in the States seems to give them credit for it. If anyone’s still doubting, they should probably listen to Last look AT Eden before they start talking trash about something they don't understand—you see plenty of those types everywhere 🙂. It's pure hard rock now, mixed with some bluesy vibes that feel like classic 70s rock... basically picking up right where they left off after that second album back in '84.

Yeah, I'd jump at the chance to catch them in concert if they ever toured through Washington, D.C. But honestly, that's a long shot, and maybe it's for the best—what's the point of playing to a crowd of 500 people anyway? 😢

They've got a new album, Bag of Bones, dropping late April or early May this year... and I'd love to hit a show if they play anywhere nearby, like Vienna or something. 🙂

Where exactly? I remember when they first started—following the first, second, and third albums—right at the beginning of my high school days... just the usual glam metal nonsense... one of those uninspired approaches to rock. It wasn't quite real metal and wasn't quite pop either; they just had all that makeup on like they were disco stars, just with longer hair. For me, even Justin Paprić looked like a man by comparison—and trust me, I never thought I'd say that, but when I first saw Europe on TV, I was convinced they were total wimps... despite the tough stares and those riffs that sounded as polished as a marble countertop.
