The latest from Richard Linklater, the guy behind Dazed and Confused. This one takes us straight back to the 80s. Looks decent enough; coming out soon.

This is what we've all been waiting for.

Dazed and Confused is his best work. I’m genuinely looking forward to this one. Boyhood felt fake and left me disappointed, but this can't be like that—especially since Freaks and Geeks is peak 80s coming-of-age stuff.

Just checking out the cast. I don't know if you noticed, but there aren't any huge stars here. It reminds me of Dazed and Confused, where he used mostly unknowns who ended up making it big later (Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Milla Jovovich, and a few others).

I’m with you—Dazed and Confused is easily my favorite, and F&G is a total masterpiece. Honestly, Boyhood was just okay for me; I think the Before trilogy is where the real genius lies.

It seems like nobody stands out right now either, though maybe someone will actually become a global superstar down the road. But man, Ben Affleck in that movie? Absolute garbage. 🤣

Fantastic film. If you’re a fan of Munjen or Dazed and Confused, this one is right up your alley. Kudos to Richard Linklater—and to Megan Ellison, who seems to be the go-to producer for backing projects like this.

Where should I catch this? At the local theater?

I honestly believe there isn't an auteur out there who resonates with me quite like Richard Linklater. While Everybody Wants Somebody !! might not be his absolute masterpiece, it remains an exceptional piece of work: optimistic, possessing a youthful spirit, and intellectually sharp without ever feeling pretentious.

I haven't sat down to watch it yet, but is it even fair to expect Linklater to ever truly top his trilogy?

One is constantly surprised by the unexpected. While Before Midnight feels somewhat like a midlife crisis caught on film, perhaps that is simply due to the influence of July, who seems to have meddled with the script. It remains a solid film regardless, though it is atypically dark for his usual style. Personally, I consider Boyhood to be a masterpiece, much like Slacker and Before Sunrise.

Look, here’s my take... that trilogy is easily my all-time favorite. I don't think there's another series out there where all three installments hold up with such consistent strength. If anything, the third one might actually be my top pick because it takes such a different turn—it leans into that darkness you mentioned, yet remains absolutely stellar.

To be perfectly honest, even though I gave Boyhood an eight, I feel like a much better film from this trilogy is 🤷 ...so, what is it about this one that makes you consider it a masterpiece? I’m asking because I just spent some time digging through the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and couldn't find anyone else who shares your specific sentiment.

Boyhood isn't actually bad, though I have to admit the trilogy is an absolute slog, and that final installment feels a bit thin compared to the others.

Hands down my favorite movie of the year so far; I was hooked from the opening shot right through to the final credits.👍

I'm heading to the theater next week, and I honestly can't wait. I just rewatched Dazed and Confused to get myself in the right headspace. That movie is an absolute masterpiece; if this new one is even half as good, I'll be thrilled.

Heh, I'm heading there next week too. I suspect it might edge out Boyhood, which isn't my thing, and land somewhere near the Before trilogy, which I actually enjoy. It'll be tough to top Dazed and Confused, but if it captures that Freaks and Geeks charm, they'll have nailed it.

Solid. A little less iconic than Dazed and Confused, but still a great watch. Pure entertainment, and honestly, it wraps up as an excellent feel-good movie.
