External hard drive enclosure recommendations?

I’m looking to pick up a 3.5" external hard drive enclosure—my plan is to pull the drive out of an old desktop that finally kicked the bucket so I can actually get to my files (since I’ve moved over to a laptop now).
I’m just trying to figure out if everything will play nice together; the drive itself is a SATA model from about ten years ago, and my laptop is roughly three years old—though honestly, I have no clue if it has USB 3.0 or if I'm stuck with the older USB 2.0 speeds.
Is there anything specific I should be looking out for before I buy?

Sure, everything you say sounds perfectly logical, though I suspect the actual speed will fluctuate quite a bit depending on whether you're running on a USB or SATA standard.
