External Hard Drive Recommendations?

I’ve got a 250 GB drive that's hitting its limit, so I finally decided to just slap in another hard drive to clear some space. Well... I popped the case open, and while everything looks perfectly organized, I can't find a single spare power connector anywhere. It seems my theoretical knowledge is significantly outstripping my actual hands-on experience, so I figured it's probably safer if I don't touch anything just yet.

Is there actually a meaningful difference between an internal drive and an external one? I'm thinking specifically about speed and performance.
For instance, if I install a game on an external drive, will it run normally, or am I going to deal with lag because it's connected via USB? I assume data transfer speeds are a bit sluggish on those, right?

What are your thoughts on this drive? If you have any recommendations on where to pick one up or which model to go for, I'm all ears.
Also, how does one even go about connecting it?

What kind of motherboard are you running—brand and specific model? Also, how many HDDs are currently in your rig, and does your case actually have enough physical room to mount another drive? As for the power supply, that shouldn't be much of an issue; you can always just grab a "Y" splitter cable to run more HDDs or optical drives off a single line. 🙂

The motherboard is an ASUS M2N-SLI deluxe. I’ve currently got one hard drive installed, though there is physically enough room for another.😁

From what I can see, you're hooking up a SATA HDD to the board, which means you'll likely need one of these power adapters to convert a Molex connector to SATA:

If you're looking at picking up an internal 3.5-inch drive, Western Digital is a perfectly fine route to take, and honestly, there’s no reason not to go with them. You can find their Black series at places like Best Buy or Micro Center, and it's a solid choice by any measure. As for Seagate, I'd suggest hunting down models from that newer 7.200.12 series starting at 1TB—specifically the ones marked in the photo below, since that represents their latest lineup.☕😁
