This movie sat on my hard drive forever, just waiting for me to finally sit down and watch it. Now that I actually have, I can't quite wrap my head around why I waited this long. 😁

For context, the film is based on the novel of the same name. The author wrote a trilogy, and there is also a sequel titled What Becomes of the Brokenhearted which I haven't seen yet. A third installment likely won't happen, and frankly, it’s probably better that way.

The sequel holds up okay, but you can really feel the drop in quality. It’s like comparing > to >. One is a masterpiece; the other is just decent, but it fails to live up to the original.

I first saw it at a video rental shop back when I was working. I remember the owner brought in a huge stack of Australian films and I just couldn't resist. I ended up powering through them one after another—> (another recommendation, by the way), >, and so on. That song is excellent. 👍

There are so many forgotten gems out there. I get it with this one; it was a popular overseas film, but it's not an American production. What really trips me up is why certain American classics—absolute masterpieces like > or >—get overlooked. The first is one of the finest noirs ever, and the second is one of the best dramas from the sixties. Sure, cinephiles know them, and even casual fans might recognize them, but they lack that widespread fame they deserve. It's always baffled me.

I suppose a film like this wouldn't be lost to time today thanks to the internet and all our tech. Nowadays, even just "okay" movies stay in the conversation for a decade. But back then, despite having so many incredible films available, these two classics somehow slipped through the cracks. I remember about five or six years ago, a friend asked me, "Have you seen >?" Like, > what? 😵🤣
