Every time I boot up my laptop, I get hit with this error message saying the OS can't start because:

File not found (macOS\apppatch\drvmain.sdb)

What does this actually mean? Is this a total disaster or just a minor headache?

It looks like the issue is with macOS—do you happen to have an installation disc handy? Maybe you could try running a system repair...??

It’s most likely just a software glitch rather than something broken with your hardware—but, you know, if things go sideways and you can't run a repair while your files are still stuck on that drive, here's a little workaround. You could grab a Linux Mint live USB from another computer. It's basically a "live" environment that lets you access all your data without actually installing anything, so you can just drag everything over to a thumb drive or an external hard drive if you have one handy. Once you've got your stuff backed up, you can just wipe the drive clean and do a fresh install of Windows.

It looks like my Windows XP Pro came pre-installed.
I’ve got some drivers on a CD sitting here at home, along with the user manual...
But the PC isn't even recognizing them.

Where can I actually download Windows XP Pro from online? And how big of a USB drive am I going to need for this?

By the way, before this error popped up, I had been leaving the PC in standby mode for quite a while.
I also kept getting those notifications saying my Office license had expired... something like that. I doubt there's a connection, but still.

I tried hitting F8, if I remember correctly, and just glancing through the options, it says I need to apply Hard 1.

You could probably find a Windows XP ISO on a torrent site eventually, but before you go down that road, you really ought to back up your files using a bootable tool—maybe something like a Linux Mint live USB—before you wipe the hard drive.

Yeah, you could just burn that Linux ISO to a drive—or better yet, use Rufus to make a bootable USB stick—then just boot from it to grab whatever data you need...
