David Coulthard thinks Formula 1 cars have been dumbed down by advances in engineering.
"There’s no stopping technological progress," noted Coulthard. He spent years behind the wheel in 158 races before moving into the commentary booth for NBC.
"We're stuck with what we've got. The issue is that Formula 1 is a high-tech playground. Manufacturers dive in to flex their engineering muscles, which begs the question: how much can you actually simplify these cars without losing the essence?
"What really gets to me is seeing a kid like Nico Rosberg—a talented guy who might reach his father's level one day, even though he's only 17 and has just one year of circuit racing under his belt—hop into a Formula 1 car and match the top pace almost immediately.
"To me, that proves one thing: these cars have become way too easy to drive."
