Gaming build under $5k

I’m just looking for a decent gaming case, budget capped at $1667, ideally something I can pick up at Best Buy in San Francisco.

I noticed a thread further down where someone was hunting for basically the exact same setup, though it looks like the graphics card and motherboard options they listed aren't even available at Best Buy anymore... so I guess I'll have to find some alternatives for those.

Are you paying cash or using a card? If you're going with cash, you could probably find a better deal and better selection at a different retailer since Best Buy isn't exactly the best when it comes to pricing. Plus, they might even deliver and set everything up right at your doorstep for free. 🙂

I guess you're looking at the Intel Core i5 3350p box, which runs on the 1155 socket at 3.10GHz with a 7MB cache and a Quad-Core architecture.
I suppose there's some discussion regarding the ASUS H77-M series motherboard.
So, looking at this PCI-E EVGA AMD Radeon R9 270 OC with the 2GB DDR5, I guess there isn't much to say beyond the basic specs. It's a standard setup, though whether it actually holds up for what you're trying to do is probably more dependent on your specific build than the card itself.
I suppose there's a 1,000 GB Western Digital Blue hard drive available.
I guess I'm looking at some 4GB of G.SKILL Value Series DDR3 1600MHz PC-12800 memory.
I’m looking at a 460W power supply, specifically the LC POWER Silent Giant GREEN POWER LC6460GP3 V2.3.
LC POWER Pro-928B Mechadroid mid-tower case, black, MIDI, no PSU included.
I suppose there's some interest regarding the DVD±RW SAMSUNG SH-S224DB, specifically looking at the Samsung SH-S224DB 5,013.00 USD links. It's one of those components that you don't think much about until you actually need it, I guess.

RAM doesn't matter; just grab the cheapest option and call it a day, unless you're pairing a PC with an APU, but that's a different conversation entirely. No need to go for the pricier version. 🙂

Not quite. This one features a VRM cooler, handles overclocking much better, and is actually slightly cheaper (well, normally it isn't, but Best Buy has some totally nonsensical pricing right now)...

Yes, that GPU is it.

As for the RAM, go with the cheapest option. There really isn't a "better" versus "worse" scenario with memory in practice unless you're running an APU.

You can grab two of these, or if the motherboard has 2 slots (cheaper Intel boards), you could also go with this one. Of course, for gaming, you'll manage to scrape by even with 4GB of RAM (at least for now, depending on what you play).

See, I didn't know. I don't have any hands-on experience, I just read what was written about it and figured it didn't matter 🙂

You can actually see it right there in the photo—that little heatsink sitting next to those black blocks near the socket. It’s an incredibly useful feature on AMD boards, especially if you're looking to push some overclocking. In my experience, high-quality boards like this always outperform those budget AsRock options when you're working with AM3+ sockets.

I have one more thing to ask. I'm placing an order for a custom build at Best Buy this morning, and the clerk mentioned the cooling might be too weak for this processor since it's a 6-core. Is she just trying to upsell me on something, or is there actually something to it?

(People tried telling me the same thing about the cooling performance, but honestly, it's a total steal)

Ah, okay, I see it now. Looking at the order confirmation she emailed me, it looks like that item was left out. I have no idea where the mix-up happened, but we'll get it sorted out... Honestly, I'm relieved, she seems like a really lovely person.
