So, a few days ago I noticed this little red ring popping up on my upper arm. The skin inside the circle is super dry, too.
I know, I know—I’m totally going to see a dermatologist, but does anyone have a clue what this might be? I'm low-key freaking out it might be psoriasis... honestly, I have no idea what that actually looks like.

It sounds like it might be ringworm. Based on how you described it, that’s my best guess. If the itching is mild, then that's probably what we're looking at. You should try applying an over-the-counter cream like Dow or Monistat; that usually clears things up pretty quickly. That said, you really ought to go see a doctor just to be safe and get a definitive diagnosis.

First off, I genuinely thought you were talking about actual goat skin for a second there.

Second—it sounds like it could be ringworm. It's a fungal thing you can pick up from cats, dogs, or other pets. It's not life-threatening, just a massive headache if it spreads to your hair and starts causing patches to fall out. You should probably just hit up a primary care doctor first; they can likely clear this up right then and there without you needing to wait weeks for a specialist appointment.

I totally agree with Sherry, that's probably what's going on... I have two cats, and one of them actually has this weird bald patch on its back from a few days ago. I honestly thought something had bitten him!

Well, then that’s probably exactly what it is. I dealt with microsporia myself about fifteen years ago. Just head over to your primary care doctor, mention that you were petting a cat with hair loss, and they'll know exactly which cream to prescribe immediately. If you apply it consistently and diligently, it should clear up in a week at most.

Anyway, why am I even going into all this detail? You absolutely must take the cat—assuming it’s yours, of course, and not some stray wandering the neighborhood, though you really ought to check regardless—to the vet and get treatment started ASAP! Otherwise, the poor animal will continue to suffer, and you'll just end up catching it from them over and over again...

You guys are seriously the best! Honestly, such a huge weight off my shoulders because I’ve always been terrified of catching some crazy skin disease, and let me tell you, seeing this was a total nightmare.
The cat and I are heading in for treatment first thing tomorrow morning👋
