So, about a month and a half ago, I had this makeup palette drop right on my fingernail—ouch!—and immediately this huge purple bruise formed under the nail. It covered the whole thing. After a day or two, it actually bled a little around the edges, but then the bruising started to fade and everything seemed totally fine for about a month. Just a heads-up though, I kept working my shifts at the warehouse during those first few days, so let's just say the environment wasn't exactly "sterile," if you know what I mean. Fast forward to about ten days ago, and the base of my nail suddenly turned this weird green color. I got a bit spooked because I’ve heard horror stories about sepsis and stuff, so I headed straight to the ER. The doctor there took one look at my finger and told me it was totally normal. He mentioned some fancy medical term starting with "hemo-" something, said it would eventually turn yellow, then black, and finally just fall off, and sent me on my way. Well, it didn't really go through the yellow/black phase, but it actually fell off today! And to my total surprise, there’s already a new nail growing in underneath, but it's got that same green tint at the root again.
Is this actually something dangerous, or will that green color eventually clear up? And does anyone have advice on what I should do next?😕

Look, if you’re seeing green, don't freak out—it’s actually totally normal. It’s just what happens when the hemoglobin in your red blood cells starts breaking down, so there's really nothing to worry about...

So it'll just clear up on its own? Man, what a relief! Thanks so much!

Look, you only need to be heading to an urgent care clinic for antibiotics if you start seeing red streaks creeping up your arm toward your body, or if there's actual pus or blood oozing from the wound, or if the finger is throbbing with intense pain and swelling, or if you’ve got a high fever kicking in alongside any of those symptoms... that's when you worry. If it's just looking a bit green, don't freak out, because once your immune system gets its act together, it'll clear that discoloration right up—it's just your macrophages doing their job, picking up the debris and hauling it off to the liver to be processed... 😁
