All the great bands are vanishing, and solo artists seem to be fading faster than ever... anyone have any theories on why this is happening?

The reality is quite grim: the music industry and its various managers are busy manufacturing overnight sensations who are forced to churn out hyper-commercialized garbage just so those managers and their cohorts can line their pockets. These "stars" only last as long as whatever fleeting musical trend they happen to be riding. It’s a sad truth, but it holds up. This is precisely why the last decade or so has been flooded with such abysmal music. It isn't about art; it's purely about the almighty dollar. There is zero passion left for the craft itself. Those who actually possess genuine talent often don't even have the luck required to get a major label to release an album today, let alone get any airplay on the radio or MTV. And in case they actually do manage to get an album released, nobody even knows who they are. In this era, achieving success through actual quality requires a staggering amount of luck.
Furthermore, if you are already an established name with a legacy, the labels will continue to push your work. But if you are a newcomer? You are facing a bleak future—one that, in reality, barely exists at all.

That’s honestly the reality of it.
There’s no more artistry or soul left in music; everything is just a commercial product now. People make music for the paycheck, not for the sake of the sound. It's the same story across almost every industry. Everything is disposable... things move fast, trends shift constantly... there's just no heart left in it!😢

I wouldn't go so far as to say everything is done instantly or solely for the sake of money. Of course, those kinds of projects exist today just as they always have, but I think people are pretty quick to spot whether something is actually high quality or just cheap filler.

The current music scene is absolutely flooded with these blended R&B, pop, and hip-hop rhythms... some of it is definitely derivative, but there are some genuinely talented performers buried in there too. Now, that’s a different conversation entirely if you simply can't stand that sound because it isn't your thing. For instance, I personally don't care for jazz, but I'm not going to sit here and say it's garbage.

Times change, so the music industry naturally adapts to market shifts and trends, which seems perfectly normal to me. That said, there is still a massive underground scene and plenty of independent labels where you can find great music. It really just depends on what attracts you and what you happen to enjoy.

As for why bands break up? Well, sometimes it's just because time catches up with them. 😛
Some split because of sheer ego and stubbornness that prevents them from functioning as a cohesive unit, some do it for the money, and others just drift apart because they've been together for decades. Take Shirley Manson, for example—she's heading off on a solo path... and it's not as if the last Garbage album was a failure. So, it's often a matter of following the money (it's not that they weren't earning enough, but they'll likely pull in more solo, plus they get much more creative freedom), though it's quite common for solo material to lack the punch of a band's work. You look at Dave Gahan and his solo stuff... and then he goes back to Depeche Mode and they put out a fantastic new record.

But then again, new faces constantly emerge, bringing fresh sounds... like that girl who used to stream her concerts from her living room, Sandi Thom... or Lilly Allen, who was so sharp-tongued yet incredibly melodic.

Obviously, none of that has to appeal to you, but the examples are certainly there.

Honestly, they’ve got nothing better to do—just spinning their wheels with money they don't know how to spend, so they end up turning to drugs. And yeah, I'm talking about those rockers specifically.
