How are view counts calculated?

I’ve been noticing that the view count column doesn't actually seem to reflect reality.
After I finish reading through a thread, the number doesn't tick up—and this happens even with brand-new threads that I haven't even touched before.
I’ve tried navigating back to the forum home page and refreshing the browser, but the count remains stubbornly frozen at the same number.

Can someone please walk me through the logic here—how exactly is the system calculating these views?

The numbers are off. I assume the authorities are aware of the issue, but whether they’ll actually fix it—or if it can even be fixed at all—is anyone's guess. 😁

I agree it isn't exactly vital, but it was one of those things that just wouldn't let me rest. I've always been the type who has to take everything apart just to understand the inner workings.
