How do I find Dad?

I suppose I should start from the beginning. I never actually met my father. Growing up, my mother always insisted he had just abandoned us; the only times he ever reached out were when I was little—usually just checking in on how school was going—before moving on to discuss child support details with her. Once I finished high school, those calls completely stopped, and he vanished entirely. Looking back at the situation now, it seems like he might not have cared about me as much as I thought, but I only pieced together what really happened through some difficult conversations with extended family. It turns out my mother orchestrated the whole separation. I don't necessarily blame her too much, though; I know he did try to see me when I was younger, but as I mentioned, she somehow managed to pull the strings to keep us apart.

Anyway, I’m trying to track him down now, but there are so many hurdles in the way. All I have to go on is his full name, his date of birth, and the fact that he lives somewhere in the vicinity of Detroit. I wanted to ask if anyone knows where I should even begin? Who do I contact? Should I be reaching out to some local police department or a government agency? I would truly appreciate it if someone could explain the process or point me in the right direction.

I understand how you feel, though I find myself not even wanting to track down my own. If he could simply walk away because I’m a woman rather than a man, then frankly, he isn't worth finding.
Is there really no way for you to get in touch with any of his relatives?
