How do I update my BIOS?

They’re telling me I need to flash my BIOS because I’m stuck on some ancient version from February 2005—version 6.00 PG. Honestly, I’m terrified. How do I actually run this update without completely bricking my entire rig? 😎Thanks.👍

If you happen to be running a more recent motherboard, there's a pretty high chance you have access to some kind of live BIOS update tool or something similar. You can probably handle the whole thing right from macOS—it usually goes smooth as silk... provided you don't lose power during those few seconds.

If you don't have that, I guess you're stuck using an old-school floppy disk and just praying to God that it actually works. 😁

Long story short.

You just grab the BIOS file and the flashing utility, put them on a bootable DOS floppy disk, boot from the floppy, run the flash, hit reset, and you're done.

There are other ways to go about it, but this is the most common and tried-and-true method.

If you haven't spent much time tinkering under the hood, my best advice is to leave the BIOS alone if everything is running smoothly. Honestly, if things are working perfectly, don't go poking around—you might end up regretting it later!
