So, here's my dilemma: I'm struggling to generate a table of contents for a document that's nothing but scanned pages from an old book. I've got this massive scan—around 500 pages—and I really need to convert it into a Word doc so I can build a functional table of contents to navigate everything. It’s pretty urgent; I need this for work ASAP. Just to be clear, I’m not exactly a novice when it comes to Microsoft Word—I know my way around the commands and tools—but I'm hitting a total brick wall now that I'm dealing with images instead of text. I can easily handle a standard typed document, but how on earth am I supposed to manage this with scans?

My apologies in advance! I was rushing to get this posted and ended up dropping it in the wrong section. Feel free to delete it, and I'll move it over to where it belongs. I see now that it should have gone under 🙄

You definitely picked the right place to start this discussion—you’re in good company here. If you're looking to shove images into a Word doc, you're going to need some decent OCR software, something like Adobe Acrobat.

Actually, that’s not quite what I’m getting at. I don't really need to convert everything to editable text, so I can skip the OCR entirely. I want the text to stay exactly as it is—basically just as an image—because I have zero intention of editing the content later. What I actually need is a way to generate a Table of Contents based on all those scanned images once I've dropped them into Word. In short? I just need a table of contents for my images.

Is there seriously nobody here with an answer? Or even just a quick thought based on what you've been through? This was completely out of left field
and honestly, I expected more from the biggest forum in the States.
Just great. I can't wait for the next disaster so I can share that with you all too :klap:

What I'm actually after is a way to generate a table of contents for all those images once they're sitting in the document. Basically, I just need a list of figures/images.

The thing is, Word builds its TOC based on text formatting—it can't "read" chapter titles that are trapped inside an image file. You’d have to convert that stuff into actual text first and then tag them as headings if you want them to show up in a table of contents.
