Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Los Angeles November 19, 2012 – FilmDistrict, Alliance Films and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions announced today that they will bring Insidious: Chapter 2, the sequel to last year’s hit film Insidious, to U.S. theatres on August 30, 2013 via FilmDistrict. Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, and Ty Simpkins will reprise their roles in the film which James Wan, who directed Insidious, will direct from a script written by Leigh Whannell who also wrote the first film. Jason Blum, who produced Insidious, is producing the low-budget sequel through his Blumhouse Productions. Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Oren Peli, Steven Schneider, and Charles Layton are executive producing. Production on the sequel is set to begin on January 15, 2013 in Los Angeles.

August 30, 2013 should be the release date for the second installment of this popular horror, Insidious. Can it possibly match the success of the first one—which turned a $1.5 million budget into a massive $97 million haul? It is difficult to say, though I suppose one can hope it gets close.

I found the first one quite underwhelming—hopefully this one steps it up... and brings in a better cast.

The first one was incredible—honestly, it was the only movie that actually kept me from sleeping soundly for a few nights. I’m really hoping this sequel is at least half as good as the original.

Am I the only one who’s constantly mixing up Insidious with Sinister?

Honestly, the first one looks incredible considering how tight the budget was—it reminds me a lot of that Jeopardy! horror vibe.

If the sequel hits that same level of quality (I’m not saying it'll be some life-changing masterpiece, just a solid, decent flick), then I am definitely adding it to my watchlist.

Just a few more days until this drops. I can't wait. The first one is easily in my top 5 horror movies of all time, and honestly, based on this trailer, this looks like it could be just as killer..

Great. Just as good as the first one, I have to say. Honestly, I had more goosebumps during this than I did watching 😁

Pretty meh. Look, let’s be real—the first one wasn't exactly some cinematic masterpiece either (honestly, I think the whole franchise is overrated), but at least it was watchable and you could tell they actually put some effort into the production value. This sequel? Aside from being pretty weak on the actual scares, there was barely even a plot. Honestly, this movie could’ve easily been thirty minutes long and the entire story would’ve still fit perfectly in that timeframe.

And don't even get me started on that nonsense at the end—I was struggling just to follow the internal logic of the film. The pacing is like a snail crawling along for most of it, only for the ending to suddenly start jumping all over the place. I couldn't shake the feeling that they just rushed through filming Insidious: Chapter 2 during their weekend breaks between shooting The Conjuring.

I sometimes worry that we're losing our edge as a culture; I guess we might need to lower our standards to an American level just to find anything "creepy" or scary at all! It feels like such a waste of talent when you have such high-quality, famous actors involved. I managed to sit through about 50 minutes before I had to stop... it was a struggle. The forced "scary" atmosphere really bothered me—there wasn't even a single decent lightbulb used in the sets, just this woman in white wandering around aimlessly. It felt dull and predictable, almost like an overambitious high school project trying to pass a class. It seems like the whole genre has gone downhill lately if it relies on cheap tricks from stuff like The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, or Paranormal Activity—basically just trying to sell a quick story with zero budget and no soul.

I actually really liked it. The atmosphere was solid and the story held up well enough. Honestly, alongside the first one and The Conjuring, it’s one of the better horror flicks out there. I’d give it a 7/10..
