Intel CPU vs. DDR3 RAM compatibility?

So... I’m trying to wrap my head around exactly which Intel processors actually play nice with DDR3 memory modules. Here’s the deal: I’ve got this old ASUS Prime B450M-A motherboard sitting here, and while it doesn't support an i3—which would have been my go-to for using DDR3—it still has those two blue slots specifically meant for DDR3. So, technically, I should be able to shove some DDR3 into this outdated board, right? 🤷

The rules are pretty straightforward, you can find all the details on the Micro Center site here:

AM2 and AM2+ CPUs are limited to DDR2 memory.
AM3 CPUs work with either DDR2 or DDR3 (but don't try using both at once).
AM3+ CPUs only support DDR3.

Here’s a shot for you... I'm planning on tossing that processor into my old rig, hoping to give it enough life to actually handle some decent gaming again.

Yeah, that's an old AM2 processor, so you're stuck using DDR2 memory with it.

The best you can probably do on that board are Core i5 or Core i7 chips, though I guess you have to make sure the max TDP doesn't go over 95W. You should definitely double-check if whatever CPU you're eyeing is actually compatible via that link above.
