I was reading some sports rankings earlier today and it got me thinking about how we categorize athletes. There is a specific kind of prestige often given to the guys who aren't the superstars, but are basically the "glue" that keeps the team from falling apart when the starters go down.
It’s a weird middle ground, isn't it? On one hand, you're being recognized for your skill and readiness. On the other hand, you're essentially being labeled as the "Plan B." I've always felt like the most underrated players are the ones who step into a chaotic situation and just do their jobs without making a scene, but I wonder if being officially labeled as a "backup" feels like a bit of a backhanded compliment to the players themselves.
Do you think these kinds of "specialized" lists actually mean anything for a player's career, or is it just fluff for the media to chew on?
