Is Intel Core still worth it?

Here’s what I’m running:
ASUS ROG motherboard, LGA 1156 chipset
Intel Core i5-760 (using a massive Arctic cooler instead of stock)
12GB DDR3 1333 RAM (2x4 + 2x2)
MSI RX570 GPU
Samsung SSD
Thermaltake 650W Silver PSU
FHD IPS 75Hz monitor

It’s an older rig, but it still gets the job done. I can't afford a whole new build right now, so I'm wondering if swapping my CPU for an Intel Core i7 would actually do anything. People say they're basically the same as the i7-860/870. I saw an i7 listed for $83 online—anyone here messed with these? Is it worth the hassle?

Go for it—those Intel Core chips are a steal right now. Overclocking really gives that generation of CPU a much-needed boost too.

Just make sure to double-check the MBO support list to confirm you have the right BIOS version for that Intel Core i7.

So, I went ahead and ordered an Intel Core i7.
It’s not officially on my motherboard's supported CPU list, but I dug through a couple of gaming forums and found lists where people have already tested it (and it works). My motherboard was on both lists.
It's not exactly breaking the bank, so I'm gonna satisfy my curiosity.

Got my Core i9 today. Threw it in and tested it immediately. Plugged it in with standard BIOS settings—no tweaking at all—and it worked perfectly right out of the gate, even though it’s not on the official support list.

The boost in Red Dead Redemption 2 is insane. I went from averaging 35 fps straight up to 55, sometimes hitting 60. In lighter games, I was hovering around 55-60, but now I'm staying steady above 70 or hitting that 75 cap.

Bottom line: massive upgrade for an absolute relic of a PC.
